when did you marry&what was your dress like?

1968

I wanted a small low key wedding and had it. I wore a plain white courtelle minidress, high military neck, long sleeves, tight into waist and slightly flared skirt. I wore my long hair tied back in a white snood and wore sheer white tights and black patent shows. I carried a tight Victorian bouquet of snow drops (my wedding was in February).

My going away outfit consisted of a primrose yellow, and quite expensive wool coat had bought the previous year put on over my wedding dress.

We are still married and I was not pregnant (as several nasty minded relatives who were not asked to the wedding suggested)

1963, at Bury registry office.

I wore a lemon two piece, box pleated skirt and plain jacket with three quarter sleeves. White sleeveless blouse underneath, white shoes, handbag and gloves, white silk flower pinned in the back of my hair, and a necklace of white beads. Hubby wore his only suit (grey) which had been to the dry cleaners, white shirt borrowed from his brother, black socks and burgundy tie borrowed from another brother, and black shoes bought new a few months earlier and put aside for the wedding. Reception in the front room of the house we were going to be living in, his family sitting down one side, mine down the other, nobody speaking!

I got married in the late 70s in December, so didn't want to freeze, unlike today's brides who seem to be determined to be half naked no matter how cold it is. So I had a thick winter white cotton lace fitted blouse with lots of little pearl buttons, really beautiful lace, I wish I had kept it. Over that I had a long suit with a big full skirt that flared from the hips, in thick winter white crepe. Also a shortish very fitted jacket. I could do up the top button across under the collar if it was very cold. (It did snow that evening) White leather boots, a bit Victorian. I suppose the whole outfit was vaguely Victorian. I had my hair long and loose and ringletty (it's curly anyway) and clipped back at the temples with pearl barrettes. Pearl necklace and brooch.

Wedding no2 saw me in a silk chiffon embroidered knee length skirt, pale coffee coloured from Monsoon nine years ago. I do still have it but it's a 16 unlike the previous 10 that was the equivalent of today's 8, so I suppose I am double the size! The top was a crinkled lace in the same colour, it was a very hot day so I never got to use the matching jacket. Beautiful kitten heeled shoes with crystals and things embroidered all over them, and matching bag. Hair long and straightened.

If I wore my hair long and straightened now, 9 years on, I would look dreadful.

1972
Long white empire line dress in 'Swiss Cotton' with a sort of broderie anglais stripe through it. Large floppy white hat. Sister and 5yo niece were bridesmaids in blue/white gingham embroidered with white daisies. All dresses made by a local dressmaker. My mother made her MOB suit in yellow/pink dogtooth check tweed and went to millinary classes to make the pink hat which went with it.
I went away in a cream linen trouser suit with red blouse, bag and clogs. DH went away in cream linen suit with blue shirt and blue shoes. We thought we were very stylish! (Now we're rarely in anything but jeans and t shirts.)

1967. Empire line straight lace dress with train, tiara and veil. I also had the daisy trimming, a bit prickly around the neck!
I had a shampoo and set on the morning and hated it, too boufant, so went home and washed and re-styled it myself. I looked more like 'me', with shoulder length hair flicked up at the ends and half fringe.

When DDs went to Playgroup, I cut off the bottom of the dress and gave it for the dressing-up box.

Forgot to say. For years I carried around in my purse an advert from a bridal magazine from the time of someone wearing my dress. The piece of paper eventually disintegrated

A friend gave her dress to an amateur dramatic group after her marriage failed

1967
White long dress with full length veil on pill-box head dress thingy.
I left it in the loft of our last house when I moved 20 years ago! I wasn't bothered about losing it as the marriage didn't last but I do wonder what happened to it!

I had a daisy headdress as well

No! 1967, I qualified in 68. Would still be married if he hadn't died in 2003

1975

A full length dress with a small train. Chiffon over silk with leg 'o' mutton (is that right?) sleeves the cuffs were in daisy lace and so was the bodice it had a high neck. It was empire line with a frill around the hem trimmed with the daisy lace. I wore my SiL's full length two tier veil and flowered head dress. I wore silver sandals.

1968 it was white with a train,round neck, full length sleeves and size 12

Feeling very ancient - married in 1965. Still with Mr Gaga. We've been through thick and thin and expect to end our days together. Couldn't face training up a new husband.

I wore a dress I had made by a local dressmaker from a Vogue pattern. Bought the materials from John Lewis - white peau de soie with French ribbon lace 3/4 sleeves, princess-line to a gentle A-line shaped skirt. No train. I had a crystal tiara and long veil and carried gold roses. Still think it looks nice in the photos but we look so young! (21 and 22)

1972 (the first time) traditional white dress , satin skirt overlaid with lace, lace bodice and lace sleeves (very Duchess of C).

1979 (second time) couldn't afford anything - skirt and blouse I already had.

1969

A salmon pink crepe dress bought from House of Fraser for £11. Just above the knee, with a high neck and covered buttons all the way up. It had long sleeves with covered buttons on the cuffs. I wore a beige and brown floppy hat and beige and brown sling backs. We got married at Birmingham Registry Office with about 10 people in attendance and had the 'do' in my mum's front room.My wedding ring also cost £11 and they gave us a free set of tea spoons with it!

A mini-dress with long sleeves that had a lace coat over it from a bridal Shop in Bold Street Liverpool it was closing down and I got it for under £20.00 in 1969 worn with white squared toed block heeled shoes (resembled clogs) on my head I wore a white satin hair band.
When I married mr.glamma in 1976 I wore a cream wide legged trouser suit with a big floppy hat which started my love affair with big hats.

Have just thought I could do it all again but not sure if my fashion sense is much better

My dress was one of the worst fashion disasters I ever made. It was voluminous flouncy with lace on every available part.The photos make me cringe even 43 years later , to top it all I also wore a white petal hat tied with wide ribbon. What ever could I have been thinking of!

Cream with lace trim. Fitted bodice with V neck, floaty sleeves to the elbow, long panelled skirt from the waist. I think the fabric was Trilobal . My gran made my dress, it was beautiful.

A long white dress that gently flared from the thigh - it had a v-neck style back and front with long sleeves that came to a point at my middle fingers. Doesn't sound much but it looked very elegant at the time. Wanting to be different, I didn't wear a veil but a simple circlet of white flowers that sat on the crown of my head. White satin shoes to complete the outfit. My first wedding was in 1974.

Remarried many years later and wore a shortish, lilac pleated skirt (pleated from the thigh), lilac vest top with a pale cream, short sleeved jacket over the top - cream shoes and bag and a big, lilac hat. I think I preferred wearing that outfit to the first!

1974 - A shortish cream, crepe dress. from a little boutique. Pink roses in my hair and a matching spray bouquet. Pearly cream peep toe high heals.
Over the years I felt it looked very much of its time when I looked at the photos. I was intrigued to see that Paul MaCartney's present wife's ( can't remember name) wedding outfit was very similar! Bet it cost much more! x

1968

My dress was long, white and made from Duchesse satin which I think was all the rage at the time. It had a train that spilled out of a pillbox style cap which was a bit 'Jackie Kennedy'

I have a picture of my sixteen year old granddaughter wearing it so I'll put it in the pictures thread. The dress has yellowed over the years and is a bit crumpled. DGD is a size six and it was a bit big on her (I think I was a size 10 in those days) so we pinned a tuck in the back for the photo.
