STRONG WOMEN

For the past year I have had to cope with an enormous amount of stress from 3 family bereavements to DH`s severe stroke. On Friday we celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary and DD organised a delightful afternoon of afternoon tea at a plush hotel with champagne flowing - most of which I drank - well most of them were driving and DH is not drinking anyway on to today and a niece who was there equated me to 2 women from a bygone age that I have always admired for their strength and fortitude - Queen Matilda and Eleanor of Aquataine - I`m actually still reeling from the fact that someone thinks I am a strong woman coping with what life has thrown at me. Thank you Anne you have made my day.

Congratulations on your Golden Anniversary, sparkygran wine!
I'm sure it's a true saying - 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger'. I hope the future is a lot easier for you. flowers

50 years! That's fantastic. What a wonderful occasion. It sounds as though you've been through the mill and deserve every swig of champers wine

A strong women--brendan o carroll's (mrs browns boys)mother

Soutra Sun 22-Jun-14 22:12:41

confused she's
a) a fictitious character
b) a comic character
and c) a man.

But seriously sparkygran I take my hat off to you! Maybe you should change your name to spunkygran!!
"I am strong, I am invincible, I am woman!!"

Ana Sun 22-Jun-14 22:17:05

Although (harking back to the 'minx' thread) in Australia apparently 'spunky' means sexually attractive...it's a minefield, but of course sparkygran may well embody both meanings of the word! grin

janeainsworth Sun 22-Jun-14 22:21:32

Ana and Soutra I refer you to the Urban Dictionary, to avoid future embarrassment wink

Soutra Sun 22-Jun-14 22:27:15

Oh dear - another word bites the dust?

Ana Sun 22-Jun-14 22:39:17

Well I already knew that, thank you jane, but the word 'spunky' has long been used as Soutra meant it!

Ana Sun 22-Jun-14 22:41:12

I suppose it's a bit like 'ballsy' - all male-sexual-bits-related hmm

Eloethan Sun 22-Jun-14 23:03:06

Congratulations sparkygran on your 50th anniversary and on being recognised as a person who has managed to stay strong throughout some upsetting and difficult times. How lovely of your niece to express her admiration and make your day even more special.

Well done sparkygran. Someone put on the thought for the day thread 'we don't know how strong we can be until we have no choice'. That is absolutely true flowers from one strong woman to another - that might sound like self-praise but I have been through the mill so many times I feel entitled to call myself strong. smile

Brendan O'Carroll's mother isn't fictitious. Mrs. Brown is. confused
From what he was saying on Graham Norton the other night his mum was a remarkable woman.
