I see Kate and Prince William are jetting off to the Maldives on hols and leaving 8 month old Prince George at home.

I'm sure Gransnetters will have varied views on this. wink

well something like this will be lovely for them smile

Or it might have been, if Maori King Tuheitia had not turned down the 90-minute slot allocated to him sad

Dancing/prancing. Whatever you call it, I'm sure it will be delightful. smilehmm

There is no doubt that I could not have even countenanced leaving any one of my children to go on holiday without them. Certainly not when they were so tiny. Most of mine were still getting breast milk at that age. But I guess that others look at it differently. Kate may find it harder than she thinks once she gets there.

annodomini Sat 08-Mar-14 19:47:06

I think 'prancing' sounds s bit derogatory. Why couldn't you just have said 'dancing'? That's what it is, after all.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 08-Mar-14 19:37:15

And if I had said prancing Chinese. Would that be racist? Or prancing Frenchmen?

If you really want to insult me, do it sensibly.

Ariadne Sat 08-Mar-14 19:36:02

Good for King Tuheita!

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 08-Mar-14 19:35:06

"Racist" hmm Yeah right. grin

absent Sat 08-Mar-14 19:28:09

A post that verges on the racist tends to affect me that way.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 08-Mar-14 19:16:42

Absent how come you always seem to sound as if you have a very bad smell under your nose? confused

Nonu Sat 08-Mar-14 18:35:53

Surely that is one of the things being "royal" is , except for the freeloaders,
two of the queen"s sons spring to mind !!

absent Sat 08-Mar-14 18:26:58

Just for the record the Cambridges will be visiting New Zealand as well as Oz during their gruelling 18-day tour. However, I doubt if they will have to watch prancing Maoris as well aborigines and the like – not sure who the "like" are – as the Maori King Tuheitia has turned down the 90-minute slot allocated to him. Wise man, in my opinion.

Nonu Sat 08-Mar-14 18:11:07

Charles didn't fare too well though , hadn"t been for queen mother , who know"s ?

Loads of well off (and not so well off) couples go on holiday and leave their kids with parents or nannies. What's the big deal?

Aka Sat 08-Mar-14 17:47:21

I don't see it's any of our business. We've said time and time again on GN that our own GC belong to their parents, first and foremost, and it's not up to us to interfere in their way of doing things. So why should we criticise someone else?

Ariadne Sat 08-Mar-14 17:40:38

So two rich, spoiled, indulged young people are going on holiday without their child? He'll have to get used to it when he's sent off to prep and public school, because that's what these people do, isn't it? Hence the perpetuation of a powerful elite in this country, from what, in the real world, would be called dysfunctional families.

We did this when our DD was 18 months old. We went to Spain for a holiday and left her with my mum. I have never regretted anything so much in my life. I still feel guilty to this day and it was over 40 years ago. My feeble excuse - I was only 20, had never been abroad. My mum said DD fretted most of the time. It was selfish and unfair on my DD and my mum. sad

I don't think it is any of our business! It is their life and they should do what is right for them. I would hate to have every part of my life examined by the media knowing that whatever I did someone would object.

Many years ago we looked after a friend's 10 month old for 10 days while they went touring with their 4 year old. No mobile phones and all we knew was they were somewhere in Europe. They had a great time and so did we.

The only time any of mine stayed away without me was when I was in hospital but that was our choice.

I have been thinking about this and about William and Kate in general. I think they had a lot of support at the time of their wedding and I know I was not alone in thinking they might bring a breath of fresh air and almost normality to the institution of royalty. Unfortunately I think a lot of us have felt disappointed by some of their behaviour since then, and I don't think it's just because we are grumpy grannies or anti royalists.

I suspect that after Diana died the queen and Charles felt very protective towards the boys, understandably so. I'm sure many of us with children of similar ages at the time were haunted by those poor boys' faces at the funeral. However I now wonder if that led them to be rather spoilt by the family out of guilt and over protectiveness.

I think kate has perhaps been similarly spoilt. Her parents have undoubtedly worked hard for everything they have, and they have been able to indulge Kate and her siblings as a result. I'm not sure this has done them any favours and I think it's odd that not one of them seems to have ever had a proper job.

I think the result of all this is a young couple who may be perfectly pleasant people, but who have no sense of duty or work ethic and every sense of entitlement. I think that as they are now in their 30s it's time for them to forge a role for themselves. It could be a very long time before William becomes king (if ever) and I think that in the 21st century he needs to consider what he wants to do with his life until that time. Do they really want to be nothing more than celebs?

Don"t suppose when we go away , our holiday is partially funded by the taxpayer[security]
Should imagine even when Kate went to Mustique , there would have had to be security in place !

Eloethan Sat 08-Mar-14 15:14:57

If it's not at our expense, whose expense is it at? Neither of them has "proper jobs".

ginny Sat 08-Mar-14 15:07:25

No, I don't suppose that are in the least interested in any opinions.

Gally Sat 08-Mar-14 14:40:07

I went away for a week when DD1 was 11 months old leaving her with my parents. They had a great time and our batteries were recharged. In those days, no mobile phones so I found a public phone each day and checked in that all was well - it was. There will always be the argument for and against what the royals should or shouldn't do and who is paying for what. George is safe with his grandparents and the parents are, like me, recharging their batteries wink. Let them have their holiday I say. I don't suppose the fact that a load of grannies are tutting about it all will bother them in the least.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 08-Mar-14 14:25:56

And other people have holidays too! Why pick on them?

ginny Sat 08-Mar-14 14:20:57

But it is part of their job for which they get plenty of perks..

I'm pretty sure there are millions who have to do very boring and difficult things to earn a living and look after every other aspect of their lives too.
