I think there is most certainly terrible child poverty in this country and to say that "child poverty is rubbish - it's parental greed and neglect" is, I think, insulting to many low paid people, most of whom are doing their best in very difficult circumstances.

Perhaps some people would like to go back to the days when poor people had to go to the boards of charities and plead for help - only to be told they should sell their furniture.

cactus60, it's my experience that the consumer goods you see have either been bought in more prosperous times when the owners were employed or - sadly more likely - are obtained on all too readily available credit. Incidentally what do you mean by 'luxury foods'?

I grew up in 50/60s also and there where 5 of us my mum made all our dresses and knitted our school jumpers etc we did have pass me down clothes but being the eldest girl (I have a twin brother) I always got the newest dress (I felt sorry for my youngest sister she had the same dress passed down for 4 years).Then at school cookery lessons where the norm but they do not have them now so a lot people tend to turn to supermarkets but a lot of people do cook from fresh ingredients some have just not learnt how to,you must remember a lot of people do hold down jobs and also receive benefits which they are entitled to do if they have a low income and if their finances can afford them a large TV then so be it who are we to judge.
