Are you still awake boheminan? I woke up at 2am again and am unable to get back to sleep . Oh well, I'd better get on with the ironing !

Patchy night - two wees and a car door slamming put the lid on a good night sleep. Greenfinch switching the brain (as well as the bladder) off can be a big problem. Hope you had a trouble free journey

Hope you managed to get some sleep boheminan.You didn't post again which may be a good sign. I've been up and down all night as I have a meeting in London today and have been worried about all the things that could go wrong on the transport system. The sooner I set off the better !

Yes, I'm....still awake.

Yes, boheminan, I often have that experience of waking myself up making unearthly gutteral noises - it happens when I'm suffering from sinusitis. They make the dog jump and move rapidly away from me! I wake terrified - I imagine because it's about not being able to breathe. Also that very experience makes me afraid to go to sleep.

I did eventually sleep, thanks. I seem to be getting used to getting by on less sleep.

Yes, I often wake myself up screaming. I went to bed at 2am this morning and drifted off quite nicely then DH shouted on the top of his voice OI, took another hour to go back to sleep.

Oh dear! What a sad little sound a sigh can bealchemillamollis, especially in the small hours of the morning. I hope you're sleeping now.

Last night was a nightmare for me - literally, only I can't remember what the nightmare's were about, all I know is that several times I woke myself up making unearthly guttural noises but went back to sleep after, very disturbing.
Does anyone else ever have this experience?

2.20am on what's going to be another sunny day - though it's still a bit dark out there at the moment. Anyone else awake???

Thanks boheminan The trouble is that I can sleep anywhere except in bed eg train ,car (not while driving !)bath and chair .It is staying asleep for a long stretch that seems to be impossible.

Good morning Greenfinch. I was going to ask if you slept well last night - then saw the time of your message (4.53am) and decided - 'probably not'.

Amitriptyline, like all medicines has a long, long list of possible side effects, and 'nightmares/hallucinations' are there, somewhere near the bottom - along with everything else imaginable. I think it depends a lot on the individual but it's not uncommon

I don't know whether to warn my friend or let her discover the possibility by herself. Does it warn you about bad dreams on the instructions ?

I only take them occasionally when my arthritis very bad. It does help me sleep, otherwise I'd be tossing and turning all night with the pain.
They always give me very vivid dreams. ( and make me snore more!)

Galen you got nightmares? How long were you on the tabs for?
It took a while (a few months) on Amitriptyline before the hallucinations/nightmares kicked in. I'm interested to hear if your friend has problems with them Greenfinch.

I find that when I take the dreaded amytryptolline.

A friend of mine has just been prescribed amitriptyline. It will be interesting to see if she reports any nightmares.

Don't think there's any 'nasties' hidden in my pill 'stash' harrigran, though it's worth noting. I only take St. John's Wort every morning and 'Kalms' (valerian) at night. Years ago I was prescribed, and took for a short while, amitriptyline, and the dreams I had whilst on them would have made Walt Disney's 'Fantasia' seem pedantic - I took myself off the things as the nightmares were keeping me awake.

Strange dreams and nightmares can be caused by medication. I get horrendous nightmares, if they were film scripts they would not get past the censor.
