As it's from the Bible, I'm not sure if it could be classed as a quote but 'Let (s)he who is without sin cast the first stone' inspires me

It's Shakespeare for me. Hamlet, Act 1 scene 3.

Look thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue,
Nor any unproportion'd thought his act.
Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar:
Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried,
Grapple them unto thy soul with hoops of steel;
But do not dull thy palm with entertainment
Of each new-hatch'd, unfledg'd comrade. Beware
Of entrance to a quarrel; but being in,
Bear't that th' opposed may beware of thee.
Give every man thine ear, but few thy voice;
Take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgment.
Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy,
But not express'd in fancy; rich, not gaudy;
For the apparel oft proclaims the man,
And they in France of the best rank and station
Are most select and generous, chief in that.
Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
This above all- to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

Hard to live up to, though.

Always struck by Dylan Thomas. "though I sang like the sea in my chains." a bit less earthy than " don't let the buggers grind you down ". {apologises for the earthy word!!!}

silvercharm Don't believe everything in the film about the man Lincoln was; remember where it was made.

Thinking of another American President, how about "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are"?

Believe it or not, when I was hopelessly lost in a remote forest after dark (my own fault) I kept saying to myself 'Keep calm and carry on'. So I did, and after nine hours I managed to get down the mountain and find a house.

recently saw Lincoln at the cinema and this sent me searching for more information and re-discovering what a remarkable man he was. Apparently, the most quoted president of the US. So here is one of my favourites. What quotes have inspired you.

“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any other one thing.”
Letter to Isham Reavis, November 5, 1855
