Does anyone else think that there is far too much petty bickering on GN

I am so tempted to say "if you can't stand the heat...................."

But I won't.

This thread had turned into a Xmas fun thread.

There is nothing 'worn' under those kilts, Elegran, remember !
Until I was 10 I attended school in England then moved up to Scotland. The Fife children who I played with soon taught me their language - though they still thought I was 'posh' because I came from south of the border.

I am a naturalised Scot whose first 16 years were spent in the south of England, so any ability in that language is due to primary or secondary (Grammar School) English education - or possibly to the influence of my parents, who spoke coherently and could spell and write a grammatical sentence. My mother left school at 14 to go into service, so in her case it was not due to an extensive education.

Gally and Marelli are also incomers. So many of us decided to stay here that Scotland must have its attractions, in spite of the weather and the midges. Is it perhaps Scotsmen?

movedalot That has to be your choice! Far be it from me, a mere Englishwoman. to make any decisions on behalf of even half a Scot!

Nellie You took the words right out of my mouth

But I controlled the seethe! She still does it to me and she's been dead for quite a while!

I hope your tooth is better, anno - you were very stoical yesterday.

OMG. Ariadne's seething again. [scared emoticon]

Vituperate away Ariadne! we're here for you if you get the vapours when the haggis comes out in the new year

Which half Nellie?

Whenever I hear Scots being proud (and I am married to one and rationally think they have every reason to be proud) my unforgiving, severe, disapproving (of everything but especially me) Scottish MiL gets into my head, and I want to say all the things I never said to her. I have to dismiss her fast, otherwise I respond quite inappropriately to even lighthearted comments. That woman's effect on me is ridiculous.

My vituperative moment has now passed, and I'd just like to say that I did not have a Scottish education and am still able to use English correctly. And I won't mention rugby...

movedalot You only need to spell half of it.

Well I'm half Scots and half Sassenach (no idea how to spell it) and I can spell very well normally using a pen but when I use a keyboard my brain and fingers seem not to communiate - so there! My excuse and I'm sticking to it.

!

*Bags& has totally gone native.

he! he! he! Instead of stirring up the Scots I should be looking at shopping lists. TTFN

I have a foot in both camps, as has Bags and so many trans-border exiles! So dinnae fash yersel, Nellie.

Nellie!

When these Scots get independence, will they want to run their own Gransnet and post only in Scottish dialects to show off their impeccable spellings?

baubles

I thought you were, baubles. That's fine. Just wanted to be clear. Tertiary education does count for something, after all

I know Bags but I was thinking primary & secondary Hey ho

Some of my education was in Scotland, baubles, by choice at Dundee, and jolly good it was too

Strangely enough, my Scottish education didn't make any mention of a 'motherland'

Not that I'm nitpicking or anything, but I believe Bags was educated in England but chooses Scotland as her home

Dinnae fash yersel' G23 I'm sure you will put the record straight. Sorry to see you were awake at all hours again. The legs?

Yes, better slow down Sel you have completely lost me - you will have to explain to me about the 'motherland' - what is that? Is it a joke? In which case I won't get it being one of those pesky types with no sense of humour
