Well merlot , fields are basically privately owned production units, there for the sole purpose of making money out of sunlight. If farmers can make more profit from turning the available photons into energy than plant or animal material...
People used to complain about the visual impact of rape flowers.
I asked my in-house energy guru if he thought there was any risk of combustion causing toxic gases. He said it would be amazing if any of them caught fire as they are not made of flammable material. And no more toxic contents than, say, a bit of agricultural machinery. Less probably.

We have 36 on our roof. Absolutely no humming has ever been heard, either quiet or any other kind.
They are really fairly flat in fields, so unless you are looking at one on an opposite hillside you wont notice it is there. I saw something the other week about some villagers saying they were being "hemmed in" by them. Which cracked me up. And what are fields but production units really. Does it make much difference if a tiny proportion are covered not in brown earth or yellow rape seed or the colour of decaying cabbage stalks but dark blue rectangles?
Much better than a huge coal power station with 3 enormous cooling towers. Though personally I think wind turbines are more aesthetically pleasing than panels. In Wellington NZ I used to peer through the curtains first thing in the morning at the turbine on the skyline to assess was it going to be a mild wind from the north or a freezing one from the southern ocean.

Solar panels presumably rounded up by solar powered bot-dogs? We have solar panels and they are totally silent.

To the best of my knowledge there are no problems at all with solar farms. They are inert, no noise, no smell and no moving parts. They just stand their quietly doing their job in daylight hours. We have two being installed in farmland around our village and more in adjacent parishes. They will be invisible from the road as the company owning them has to plant dense hedgerows around them and as the land in the parish is as flat as a pancake they are not visible from higher ground. They have the added advantage that animals can be allowed to graze among them to keep the grass down. I would infinitely prefer to have my local fields filled with solar panels than have b****y wind turbine sticking up and visible for miles. PV panels are also not dependent on the vagaries of the wind. You can see where my preferences lie.

I don't know about solar panel farms but I do know various people who have their roofs covered with solar panels - no 'hum' of either the noisy or smelly sort! I can't imagine they would beallowed to instal them on people's homes if they were full of toxins or otherwise dangerous.

I think it will go ahead, POGS. There is already one about six miles across the Fens. I wouldn't want to be able to see one from my window as I guard our view very jealously. DD1 is a health and safety consultant and works two days a week for a firm involved with their siting. I'll ask her if she has any information on possible toxins.

I flew into a panic when we had notification of a solar panel farm applying for planning permission about 3/4 mile from us. We won't be able to see it from here but I hadn't thought about toxins.
