Music for homemade DVD

My DH has just put together a whole load of old cine films he has taken of the family over the last thirty years to make one DVD. As the films are silent we are trying to find suitable music to put with the DVD, which includes family activities, motor racing, Christmas times etc. I am finding one hour of Scot Joplin rather too much! Any ideas?

My daughter did a compilation for her friend's wedding, and says she Google'd for ideas then sampled from iTunes, and was able to fade in each song for as many seconds as was needed, then fade out until the next song appeared. She said it was easy but time-consuming. Someone with some tech knowledge may be able to add more?
