What are you reading right now?

Sweet Tooth was a really good read - Ian McEwan - although every review I have read seems to have panned it. Now reading Waiting for Sunrise by William Boyd and I am racing through it.

Although I do buy books from time to time, I am fortunate to have an extented family member who is single and in a well-paid job and I get passed on books from her at a cracking rate. She is a prolific reader and always passes on books as soon as she has read them. Lucky me.

I've just finished Waiting for Sunrise. Just love William Boyd. His plots seem to me to be getting more complex with each new novel. One of my sons used to work for WH Smith and hand on proof copies of new books to me. He also got several signed copies of books for me, including David Attenborough's autobiography.

Just finished The Killing Kind, by John Connelly, never read him before, quite enjoyed it. Just about to start Taboo, by Casey Hill, a new author to me.

I'm just starting on John Major's new book, My Old Man - it's a history of British Music Hall, his father having been a Music Hall artiste.

Taboo was really good. Now reading I Am God, by Giorgio Faletti, OK so far.

Just finished reading 'The Great Escape,' by Paul Brickhill. I am now starting to read 'Good As Dead,' by Mark Billingham.

Trying hard with the new Sebastian Faulks A Possible Life; has anyone else read/finished it?

I Am God was a brilliant read. Am just about to start Dead End, by Leigh Russell.

This is going to sound ridiculous but on holiday in Crete last week I read The Great Gatsby - I had never actually read it before - you cannot help but imagine Robert Redford in it the whole way through though - not a bad thing! I hear it is being re-made with Leonardo Dicapprio. (sp?)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. For me Robert Redford is Jay Gatsby. How can Leo Di Caprio be any better, though he is a fine actor, improving as time goes on.

I have just finished The Kasmir Shawl by Rosie Thomas and found it an excellent read. Can highly recommend it. An easy but very different read.

Dead End is a bit slow and boring so far, but I will persevere.

Ben Fogle's autobiography; it's keeping me away from other thgings. A good easy read.

Just finished VIII by HM Castor which, you won't be surprised to hear, is about Henry VIII. It's written with the king as narrator and in the historic present which isn't so bad when it's a first person narrator. It attempts to account for the deterioration in Henry's character and appearance - and his obsession with producing a son and heir.
I think it was a Kindle Daily Deal.

I am Reading a lot of Angela Carter non-fiction and her novel Wise Children

Gobbled up Ben Fogle's Autobiography in one evening; now onto Clare Balding's! My Animals and Other Family is another "easy" read, but so intertesting to see what former Clare! Looking forward to her chairing Have I got News for You next week. My library is wonderful and getting all the new books and no reservation fees either!!

I read that a couple of weeks ago Ian. I'll be interested in your opinion, but won't spoil it for you by giving mine yet!

I liked the idea of escaping via parallelism, quite a neat concept. It was my first William Boyd, whether the others will match up to this one I'm not sure. It was definitely full of surprising pieces.

I think Boyd's plots have grown more convoluted with each new novel. The one before this, 'Ordinary Thunderstorms' was pretty involved too. Certainly, you will find that his other works measure up to this one. He manages to mix comic scenes with serious themes - try 'Armadillo'.
