Multi storey car parking damage

Scraped two parked cars (minor damage) a couple of years ago, and left a note with contact details under the windscreen of each. Never heard from either of them.

OH and I came out of Sainsbury's one day to find a young woman standing by our car. She had scraped the rear wing while trying to park and she wanted to pay for the damage. We were happily surprised at her honesty as we probably would not have noticed the damage for days and would never have worked out how it happened. Long story short, she arranged and paid for the repair.
It was lovely to be on the receiving end of an act of goodness. I am all the better for it.

We'd never consider running off either, though fortunately (touch wood) haven't been in this position. We've had someone scrape our car while it was outside the house, a very honest neighbour who knocked on the door to let us know and offer to pay for the repair. And a local GP damaged another while it was parked at a junior football tournament. She left a note on the windscreen with her details and an apology. It certainly takes the sting out of any damage when the other person is honest.

We've had a couple of the other type too.

I wish it was you, an honest person, that had damaged my car last year when I had left it in two different car parks. On one occasion I had to have a new passenger door - cost £998 my excess £300 and just 10 weeks later someone had damaged my drivers door and wing cost £895 and my excess again £300. Given the amount of damage on both occasions there was no way that the person did not know that they had damaged my car badly. Unfortunately on both occasions the area that I had parked in was just out of range of the CCTV so they could not conclusively see which car had been responsible
So I am £600 out of pocket through no fault of mine and luckily my insurance no claims was protected- otherwise my premiums would have increased. So the people that said to you that they wouldn't have bothered leaving a note as the car is insured would hopefully think again if it happened to them as it does cost people money when this happens. I could do a lot with £600 as I am sure others could too.

I've had two entirely different experiences in multi-storey car parks. In the first one I was just about to pass a car parked on the end of a bay when the drivers door opened and hit my car, the woman who got out said it was my fault but i was alongside going slowly when she opened the door with quite a force. The second was with 2 toddlers in tow and trying to keep an eye on them and coping with putting up a pushchair (long before the days of proper car seats) I managed to lock the car but left the keys in the lock and some kind person left a note on the windscreen to say they'd handed the keys into the pay kiosk.

I was furious when our car was hit right outside our house, it was only a few weeks old and the first time we had ever owned a brand new car. OK, admittedly it was only a Fiesta but this was 1990 and in a cul de sac. Neighbours, who we were friendly with, swore blind they had no idea what had happened. Then two other neighbours mentioned they had seen the incident happen, it was the first bunch of neighbours we had asked. Swines. They did pay up in the end but it left a nasty taste. Well done you for leaving a note grannysue, you'd have been left wondering if CCTV had filmed the whole thing.
