Short novel for book group!

Susan Hill's 'I'm the King of the Castle', I've just reread it for tutoring purposes and had forgotten how excellent it is!

Another vote for John Boyne! Brilliant writer.

The Elements books by John Boyne need to be read in order

Water by John Boyne
Anything by Claire Keegan

Classics:

Animal Farm by George Orwell

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

Fahrenheit 459 by Ray Bradbury.
Terrific book. Much conversation/discussion

On Chesil Beach. I read the whole lot in one go waiting for a hospital appointment

A very good book. I'm reading it now and loving it. Perfect for discussion in a reading group.

Clare Keegan came to my mind immediately too. Small Things Like These would be top of my list.

Which is why our book club (20 years running this November) only meets every 2 months!

We decided when we started it tgat monthly meetings were too prescriptive. Some folk have busy lives, some are slow readers and many decided they wanted more time between meet ups so tgat they would have space to choose their own books.

Works well when you think about it.

Another vote for Claire Keegan's Foster. It was the basis for an excellent film in the Irish language - An cailín cúinn- (the quiet girl).

Any of John Boyne's Element books, Earth, Water, Fire and Air. Loosely linked but all 4 are stand alone novels.

I would also second Claire Keegan's books.

Shyness and Dignity by Dag Solstad or The Bloater by Rosemary Tonks,. Both discussed on Radio 4's a A Good Read.

A third, Cold Spring Harbor by Richard Yates.

All very different, all can be read in an evening or two and all have much to discuss.

Claire Keegan’s books are short but have plenty of discussion within them.

Three Days in June by Anne Tyler

Elizabeth Strout is wonderful but I wouldn’t say her books are short!

Another yes for Lucy Barton

Orbital by Samantha Harvey.

Mesmerising .....

My name is Lucy Barton, by Elizabeth Strout.

Foster by Claire Keegan. Short, sweet and moving.
