All the above and Peter Robinson's DI Banks series (or he might be DCI by now), set in the Yorkshire Dales. The author came to speak to a meeting here a few years ago and was really engaging. He answered lots of questions from the floor.

Another Susan Hill fan here , along with Cara Hunter , Lisa Jewell and of course Colin Dexter .

Val McDermid's Karen Pirie ones are very good. I would second P D James her books are very well written. My favourite crime author was Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine, particularly her later ones.

Lisa Jewell's latest books now have a crime psychological angle to them, I've enjoyed those.

I'm another who likes all the Rebus books. Gives you a real flavour of Edinburgh and other parts of Scotland and he's a really interesting character and quite nice underneath it all.

Try Susan Hill’s Serralier series Nanamar as absorbing as Ruth Galloway! Just finished The Night Hawks, a year to wait until the next one!

You didn’t mention PD James. Beautifully written.

If you like something with a mediaeval flavour, S.W. Perry’s Jackdaw Mysteries are interesting and suspenseful. They are set in Elizabethan London and are very well researched too.

J.M. Dalgleish’s Norfolk Mysteries series. DI Tom Janssen and his boss DCI Tamara Grieve have interesting cases to solve. I like them because I know the places they are set so they resonate with me.

Martina Cole but it can be a bit graphic..... I absolutely love her books and I’ve read all of them at least twice

If you watched the television series, and weren’t very impressed, the books are much better.

Also Mark Billingham, Val McDermid, P D James, Kate Atkinson’s Brodie series, Peter May, Peter Robinson, A A Dhand. All really good.
