When you are enjoying a book so much!

The writer who recently hooked me is Quintin Jardine. If you like crime, murder mysteries (set in Edinburgh and nearby), he's pacy and intricate. I was lucky enough be introduced to the book which was the first in a series of 26. My local library was sick of the sight of me as I devoured them apace. Some potentially great recommendations here. I've noted every one and am about to venture to the library. Did RP Shellseekers years ago and remember loving it so will now pursue the others mentioned with gusto. Yet again, THANKS, ladies.

The Vorkosigan series, space opera/Georgette Heyer style, gives you a nice long end game usually. Bujold is one of my favourite authors.
In one of the Farawy Tree books by Enid Blyton the children find a magic book. There is always just one more page so that you never have to finish this book, that you are hopefully enjoying. I've always remembered that book

I'm another who can no longer persevere with a book if it doesn't grab me at the beginning. I want to be drawn in, not struggle to get in.

I feel the same, just finished the latest in the Storm Sister series by Lucinda Riley, there will be seven in all, can't wait for the next; trouble is there is such a long gap between each one being published.

Just finished "The Gustav Sonata" by Rose Tremain - so moving. Have you read her "Music and Silence"?

I am reading The Hope Family Calendar at the moment. It was in a pile of books that I won in an advent competition which is an interesting way to have books chosen for you.
I am half way through it and want to finish but I don't have any great urge to pick it up and continue. It is about a man whose wife dies in a car accident leaving him to look after two daughters. It is very middle class. A lot of angst about whether to have a nanny (who falls into his lap and is perfect) or to give up work for a couple of years and live off his substantial savings and insurance money. His boss is understanding and will keep his job open for him. I find it very irritating but finishing it feels like a challenge.

I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes is a very long read but I couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end.

I have read a few books recently that have been hard to leave alone. I have also read some which I could not get into - and they are the ones that I feel quite guilty about because they are good writers and the fact that I don't like their books makes me feel that my reading tastes are rather shallow. I have recently ditched the likes of Margaret Attwood (I came back to The Blind Assassin three times and still couldn't warm to it), Lionel Shriver and Margaret Drabble. Perhaps I'm not trying hard enough.

Most of our books come from (and go back to) charity shops, but this one came from the pub!

The only time Mr P and I go "out" is to meet friends and watch the racing on Saturday lunchtime.

The pub has a library of books, CD's, DVD's and computer games

You just help yourself and make a donation to the local air ambulance.

I take all my books to the village library where they go into the Independent books.

To be honest kitty If I can't get into a book after a few tries I do ditch it. Life is too short to read books that aren't enjoyable. (I take it to a charity shop BTW - I don't throw it away!!)

She wrote "The Time Traveler's Wife".

What is it that makes us keep on reading when we don't care what happens? It's very rare that I ditch a book before the end even if it's dire, which is ridiculous when you think about it.

Oh yes, I love reading and you can tell if I am totally in a book because I carry it around with me and read at every opportunity. Then I feel so sad when I come to the end of an enjoyable book.
I can also re-read my favourite books over and over. The amazing thing is there are always parts of the book that I don't remember??

Exactly, sone books I slow down toward the end to build the suspense , others I just think thank goodness that is over. I read a lot and recently have had a few books where the spelling and grammar are not good, others where the wrong words have been used. It drives me mad . Are there no proof readers now ?

I agree with Greyduster about feeling bereft after finishing a book, although sometimes I just plod on to the end because I feel I have to, then I'm ready for another read. One book that surprised me was Kate Atkinson's A God in Ruins. I enjoyed reading it but the ending was so unexpected that I just kept thinking about it. Currently reading Trouble with Goats and Sheep. It's well written, and started off well, but I just want to get it finished now.

Absolutely agree with all the comments above.

I always look to see what else the author has written and then order them from the library if I think that I have not already read them.

The trouble is I am hopeless at remembering the titles of the hundreds and hundreds of books I have read so often find myself sitting down to read a "new" book with anticipation, only to find, a few pages in, that I have already read it!

Yes! but you get to the point of no return when you absolutely can't delay the inevitable and are left bereft.

Yes! You get so few of those and I always read them so much more quickly than others.

Yes and I hate the way some endings are rushed and you're left dangling so to speak.

I used to love the old fashioned aga sagas where you almost felt you were IN the book.

Rosamund Pilcher's Nancherrow and Marcia Willett's books always had that effect on me.

right now am on a scandia noir kick
like to get at least4-5 (in a row)
of one author/character to dive into.
also the i wish it would /wouldnt end thing.
especially at the last 50 pages or so.
want to finish it but dont want it to end
