I do towels on 60 but not bedding.

Same here, I am guided by labels for everything except towels which I wash at 60 degrees.

I do everything on 30 degrees and never done anything different for years
Machine seems fine, however I don’t use any conditioners or pods or fancy stuff , just washing powder

I do almost everything on 40 bar any towels, especially dog towels.

But at least twice a month I run an “empty” wash, with either soda crystals or proprietary washing machine cleaner, at 99c Likewise our dishwasher.

We still have 6 adults and four dogs in our house so both machines, plus dryer going every day sometimes two or three times!

My friend, who was a washing machine engineer, told me to use the hottest wash possible using soda crystals every now and again. This cleans and clears the machine.

As once advised by someone known as Piglet John on MN, I did a very hot wash with just soda crystals. It was astonishing to see the dirty grey foam that appeared! I had to do it twice, to see ‘clean’ foam.

Apparently the ‘murk’ was down to the residues of gel pods and fabric conditioner. I have used neither ever since, just powder, and rather less than I used to. Results are still fine. I now add soda crystals or similar to every wash.

I do bedding at 60, it’s pure cotton though.

I would agree the machine needs to be “flushed out” occasionally.

Years ago my health visitor told me that if you wash at too low a temperature then tumble dry it can cause bacteria to multiply..
She said line drying was better.

I only use my dryer in an emergency, I love crisp bedding line dried and pressed.

I do towels & bedding on 60.
Switch to powder now & again, as those gel capsules gunk up the machine.
Soda crystals are good for cleaning the pipe work on a hot cycle, but may need to rinse a couple of times.

I also take my drawer out & leave it to dry in the sink so it doesn’t go black.

Same here. I wash everything else at 40 degrees unless delicate.

I do almost everything at 30 and don’t think I have ever suffered any ill effects.

Run the machine through empty on a hot wash now and then.

I recently had an engineer over to check my washing machine, so boring I'm not going to go into that detail! However, both engineers, don't know why it warranted 2 that day but hey, what do I know? Both engineers said it's a problem with me not running my washing machine at 60 degrees for anything, not even the regular machine wash. They then went on to say I should be washing my bedding at 60 on Cottons, when I've been washing on 30 or 40 for environmental and energy reasons. Cos bacteria they said can only be washed out at 60 and above.
Well I then got a bit neurotic and did a bedding wash today set to 60 on Cotton.
Took my bedding out, and decided to check the labels, after the event I know! Sometimes I feel so stupid at my age forgetting all the routines I used to have. Lo and behold, my variety of bedding is between 30 and 40.
Now I feel completely stupid as I was doing the right thing by my bedding all along, but obviously not decimating any bacteria.
I'd be very grateful for any thoughts, advice, routines etc, washing laundry used to be so simple in the good old days, the only thing I ever thought about was not mixing colours etc.
