Can you recommend or not?

I really enjoyed the film but not the musical, except for odd moments here and there. Irreverent and not appropriate for the subject matter. I’m also really fed up of stories being turned into tuneless musicals too (cheaper?) rather than being written as a musical first and foremost. Thankfully our local theatres are reversing the trend a bit and there’s a good selection of plays for the coming season.

Loved it! Was blown away just like others. Big shout out to the unseen back stage crew who must have worked at the speed of light (if you know you know).

I saw it in Nottingham and thought it was brilliant, funny, slick, vivacious and superbly acted. However, you need to either know the story or concentrate very hard. As I had seen the film I did know what it was about.
It did get a standing ovation from a full house!

I watched a program about only the other night and was very well done. I'd watched most of the World at War programs years ago so don't know how operation mincemeat passed me by. I will have to check where the play is on.

Yes, I went to see it last year and really enjoyed it. It is funny but there is a very moving song in it too. Loved it.

M0nica, I was just coming on to post that Glyndwr Michael is indeed shown proper respect, but you've just done it! To answer Charleygirl5 (yesterday, 21:33:53), the title is the name of the operation concerned, that's all.

While it is a very funny show and the music is energetic (in a good way, I love it), there are some very moving moments in it too, and the bits which need to be taken seriously, are taken seriously.

Like others, I didn’t think the subject matter was right - it’s an incredible part of our history, but making it into a jolly musical just seems disrespectful to Glyndwr Michael and his family. But everyone seems to rave about it, so perhaps it’s sensitively done and I’ve missed out by not booking when the show was in the area?

This is exactly how I felt, but DH and DD wanted to see it so I went to and was shocked when I found myself blown away by it and they do pay proper tribute to Glyndwr Michael. I will say no more so asnot to spoil it.

I am among those born in and around the last war to whom these stories are the stories of our parents generation, our fathers fought in WW2, and some in WW1, but to our grandchildren these events to them are what Boer War and Crimean War were to us.

Both my grandfathers fseved in WW!. One grandfather, 2 great uncles and a cousin died in that war. To my grand children, these are great great grandfathers. That is a lot of distance - and perspectives change.

I have seen the film it was in black and white. But wouldn't have thought it would make a good subject for a musical. They my trivalise the subject matter.

The stage show is very different to the film but both are excellent in their own way. I am taking my grandson to see it at our local theatre in November. I loved the film so will not compare the two.

Saw it in London. It was quite good but the theatre spoilt it for me as only two sets of two toilets. Saw it mentioned in a review and yes people ran for the toilets. Shame as the rest of the theatre was good and staff friendly.

My dad took me to see the film when I was about 11, and I've seen it since on TV. To me, it seems a strange subject for a musical.

I often think I live on a totally different planet I ve never heard of this musical or heard it mentioned

I love musicals but couldn’t believe ‘The Man Who Never Was’ a suitable subject. Then six of my family went at Christmas 2024, 18 to 80 with very different knowledge and experience of theatre, music and WW2, we rarely agree about anything . We were all absolutely blown away by the production and have recommended it enthusiastically. This production is remarkable on so many levels, even the lighting deserves an award.

I am so annoyed with myself for resisting DH’s attempts to get me to see if at a neighbouring city to ours. I think it will have to be an expensive trip to London now.

It has such an odd title I wouldn't have looked twice at it, but thanks for your comments. One mustn't judge a book by its cover, methinks.

It's amazing - seen it several times in London and looking forward to seeing it again later this year. All of our friends and family members who have seen it also thought it was brilliant. Hope you love it too, NanKate.

Yes, yes, and yes again. We saw it at Milton Keynes a few months ago, I was doubtful, but loved it. It has been well received by the critics.

I haven’t seen it but friends of ours saw it in London. They enjoyed it so much they booked to see it again at our local theatre.
The dates weren’t convenient for us unfortunately though.
