Tattoos on older women

I know tattoos are a thing now, & I’ll probably be slated, but whilst on holiday, & walking round the seaside today, I noticed a lot of woman in their 60s/70s have tattoos.
I think they probably had them in the 90s as the tattoos looked blue & faded.
I know friends of mine had them done, especially around the belly button, shoulder & lower back.
Some regret getting them done, two have had them removed.

Now all the younger people seem to have full sleeves & full thighs, & lower legs, is this trend persuading the older generation to get one?
I know, each to their own, but personally I don’t care for tattoos.
Just wondering what other grans think of tattoos?
Do some grans have them & regret getting them done?

Weren't they offered to women who had had a breast removed.

I try not to be judgmental but there’s a woman at my gym who has a tiny Tweetiepie tattoo on her back. Likely quite cute when it was done. Now though, The colours are blurry and the shape looks distorted. It looks such a blemish.

My 15 yr old GD appeared with both arms and hands covered in the most beautiful flowers, leaves and foliage. I truly didn’t know what to say! Probably along the lines of “Oh my goodness”
“gran “ she explained gently”it’s done with henna and templates and will only last for a few showers “. I was mightily relieved.
Surely that’s a better way to decorate yrself if and when you want to without it being permanent for life.?

I generally don’t have strong feelings either way re tattoos apart from when I see young women with tattooed legs.
I have a network of scars, blemishes and varicose veins on my legs, they’ve been like that since my twenties so when I see a young woman with a tattoo on her otherwise perfect skin I’m afraid I’m jealous!

The vast majority of tattoos look revolting on women.

In your opinion....which you ate entitled to. I love tattoos

OP said "Just wondering what other grans think of tattoos?"

Surely the reply would be "I think they're..." or "Personally...".

Those making comments about dirty, common, hideous etc come over to me as judgemental. Others say they're tongue in cheek. Without knowing anyone on here personally (perhaps others do), I find that a bit of a leap.

Hideous and common.

Nearly as hideous as being a snob!

Ziplok Fri 17-Jul-26 14:16:26

I don’t like them at all, and it’s my choice not to have any. Equally, many do like them, and of course, it’s their choice to have them if they so wish.

As far as I’m concerned, most of them look quite ugly, especially when covering large parts of the body, and as they fade and skin starts to sag, I think they look even worse - but, that’s my opinion, and I know many people will totally disagree with me, as is their right to.

I know lovely people with tattoo’s -
Tattoos do not pick people out to be ‘common’ or ‘dirty’.
More creative and often deep thinkers.

Well said

Just awfull...embarrassing and looks common

It doesn't really matter who thinks what about tattoos.
Nobody is going to have theirs removed because some granny who they've never met thinks they're nasty.

Nobody is going to be held down and made to have one by a "common" person.
Have what you want, where you want, or don't, and enjoy.

Well said.

All of which are horrible. It’s funny how people think they are being individuals but they all end up looking the same.

Then you clearly haven't looked close enough

Honestly, the hate on here. I’ve had four tasteful tats (nature inspired) done on my forearms since I was 65 (I’m now 68)
and I love them. They’re an expression of my creative and still rebellious nature.

Definitely the hate is disgraceful. I don't think of anything I "hate" dislike yes, so much snobbery about what other people choose to do with their bodies. I have 2 and love them

singingnutty Fri 17-Jul-26 14:25:32

As so many are saying here - personal choice. However, having the face tattooed surely means it's very difficult to disguise if you change your mind. The post above about tattoos after breast removal is probably about the tattooing of a nipple on a breast reconstruction. We have someone in our town who has pioneered medical tattooing.

🤦‍♀️

Kartush Fri 17-Jul-26 14:26:12

My grandson has them and I love his, my daughter has them and I love hers but I do often wonder what they are going to look like in old age, when skin sags and the black panther that is just above her hips ends up on her 80 year old buttocks

Dreadwitch Fri 17-Jul-26 14:31:06

Why does it matter to you whether someone has tattoos or not? It doesn't affect you in any way and you don't have to like them, nobody with a tattoo is insisting you join the club so why would you go out of your way to complain about what others do?

Silvershadow Fri 17-Jul-26 14:33:31

I think tattoos became mainstream when the Beckhams started having them all over. Prior to that I don’t recall so many all over peoples bodies. But, each to their own.

Babamaman Fri 17-Jul-26 14:34:25

Hi
I just don’t like tattoos! Not on women of any age! Why desecrate a beautiful body? Many have them going up their necks as well.
There is nothing worse than seeing beautiful bride in a stunning dress and there across her back, arms, neck the ugliest ink work ever.
I’ve never seen any woman where it loooks nice.
I know some have their late mothers, lost child’s names tattooed on them. But surely you can remember them in your heart!?
No no no tattoos are horrible

Ukelady1 Fri 17-Jul-26 14:39:12

I just wonder what these works of art will look like when the owners’ skin is old and wrinkly🤨.

Cossy Fri 17-Jul-26 14:40:40

Good grief, how many more snotty people on here are going to continue insist that woman having tattoos are “common”?

My DM was called a “scarlet harlot” by her to be FiL her terrible crime? Red nail varnish and matching lipstick. The only type of makeup she wore her entire life.

Honest ladies, please go get a grip, judging women by how she looks should have gone “out of fashion” by now.

You think tattoos are “common”, I think your comments are frightfully old/fashioned and in some cases very rude!

Who cares! It’s not your skin!

Peaseblossom Fri 17-Jul-26 14:41:18

I think they look hideous whatever the age, and having them all over their hands and neck and God forbid even on the face is an abomination! They look extremely tacky.

KatyaStrings Fri 17-Jul-26 14:41:51

I really like them. I often say nice things if I’m next to a tattooed person in a queue or waiting room. I have an inflammatory illness so have never been able to have any, regretfully.

Well take heart from the fact you won’t be around to see this AND technology will have moved so far forward a pen will wipe them off.
