Jersey Royals

I’m talking about genuine Jersey Royal, loose, grubby with soil and you can practically rub the skin off ( I don't just scrub and boil). Tescos come in plastic bags and I’ve looked on line but can’t seem to find any.
So where can I get them? Anyone seen them? Even our farm shop don’t do them.

Organic Jersey royals available in Riverford boxes currently.

Loved Jersey Royals, but they don’t have the taste they had years ago.

I cant justify that cost as there is only me likes them. One son wont touch veg and other only loves mash. You dont nash new potatoes, especially not jerseys at that price!😆

Nannan2 Fri 29-May-26 14:27:17

REKA- is it only 1kg in a one bag then? OMG they are expensive.😁

NO, Wheniwasyourage- you are not getting old! I too have noticed that the Jersey Royals dont taste as good as they used to- i loved these always, and when we were kids(im 62 now) my mum would scrape at the skin and boil them and they tasted absolutely lovely, put a small knob of butter on- like food for the Gods- but now there seems to be hardly any flavour/taste to them🫤I got some from M&S which were a bit better than other supermarkets (tried a few) but not quite how they used to be...

We bought a plastic bag of them in tesco. Two days later they had turned green. Rubbish.

Aldi have them. Wondering if they actually grow them in Jersey any more, seems to be an awful lot of them from such a small island!

Asda have had them in for the last few weeks. For some reason they are displayed amongst the citrus fruits rather than other potatoes, so I was lucky to spot them. They are very tasty, I keep boiling up a pan full, coating in butter and eating them cold through the day, like sweets. Not healthy but they won't be available for long.
As with all potatoes I transfer them from plastic to a paper bag and store in the dark.

and cook for 50 minutes at least on a rolling boil

50 minutes?

Surely not!

Should that read 15 minutes?

I had horrible J Royals from Waitrose last year. Expensive and awful. I emailed and complained. Sent a pic of the bag and got a refund and hardly an apology.. I told them I thought the Jersey farmers must be laughing all the way to the bank

The previous weeks I bought theor Majorcan new potatoes which were fabulous. And had the slightly sandy outer texture.

MissAdventure Thu 28-May-26 17:37:36

Hope you enjoy every mouthful Tanith smile

we used to love them, but over the years they just don't seem to taste the same...maybe it's my taste buds ,

I think it could well be our taste buds that we lose as we age😣
Friends always say how good my new potatoes are, I use plenty of salt to cook them in, with a sprig of mint in the water and cook for 50 mins at least on a rolling boil. Then add butter and chopped chives. All these things give tasteless potatoes some real taste.

REKA Thu 28-May-26 17:02:23

Those coming direct from Jersey do . Which is how I found them. The supermarkets offerings were dreadful. But you can get them and they're not cheap but the taste and texture is just what we used to have back in the good old days

Witzend Thu 28-May-26 16:37:01

To me they’re hardly worth paying extra for any more - they just don’t have that special, unmistakable Jersey taste, like they used to. Something to do with no longer using seaweed as fertiliser, I have read, which would seem to make sense.

Aveline Thu 28-May-26 16:28:18

I loved the ones we had in Jersey last year. The creamy texture was so lovely.

REKA Thu 28-May-26 16:09:45

Not many left!

REKA Thu 28-May-26 15:58:16

They aren't everywhere, that's the point. The ones you get from supermarkets, Waitrose, M&S etc are nothing remotely like the ones we used to have.

The ones I order from Richardson are exactly what we're looking for. Just like the good old days

MissAdventure Thu 28-May-26 15:58:14

I grew some jersey potatoes from a couple that had been knocking around in and needed throwing.
I grew them in a bag for life!

Grannynannywanny Thu 28-May-26 15:58:04

I saw some on my travels earlier today in a farm shop in Cumbria. They were in sturdy paper bags and priced at £8 per kilo.

tanith Thu 28-May-26 15:56:08

They won’t taste like Jersey Royals though.

MissAdventure Thu 28-May-26 15:54:49

Potatoes are really easy to grow.
Honestly one of the easiest things.

Sago Thu 28-May-26 15:51:54

We ate lots in Jersey a couple of weeks ago, they keep the best ones on the island!

If you can get them try Boston New potatoes, as good as a Jersey but a different flavour.

Boz Thu 28-May-26 15:45:21

They are everywhere but at a price, so not as many in stock as there used to be.
