Actually, it was called a libety bodice because it was made of flannel and was not stiffened in any way, thus giving the wearer a sense of freedom which was most definitely not a feature of the boned, pleated and cross-hatched corsets grown women wore when little girls were suddenly allowed liberty bodices instead of boned and tightly laced "stays".
