Well, what a great little toaster! Heats up so quickly and the sandwich was delicious! The tip about placing a piece of damp kitchen roll in after using is brilliant. Really pleased with it. Thank you all.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I’ve ordered the one NotAGran55 and Farmor15 recommended for the main reason I’m lazy and it seems easy to clean, plus they love it. Looks like they do a nice flat sarnie which is what I was after. Looking forward to one for lunch tomorrow when I get back from Argos! Thank you all.

Here's how I do mine in the air fryer:

Butter one side of the bread and then turn both slices over.
Place grated cheese and ham on one slice and cover with the other one - making sure butter side is showing.
Sprinkle some grated cheese on top and place in air fryer.
Cook until nicely browned and cheese topping is bubbling.
Turn sandwich over and sprinkle a bit more cheese on top and cook until browned and cheese is melted.
Serve and enjoy - bon appetit !

I haven't given any cooking times as all air fryers operate slightly differently.

I'd like to know also how to make a toastie in my air fryer. I'm told they are wonderful but I tried one and it wasn't great.

The best ever toasted sandwich has been done in my air fryer - they are sublime ! I've had lots of compliments from family members who all say this method knocks the traditional way into a cocked hat. My original machine is now redundant in a kitchen cupboard.

I saw a cookery demo on TV the other month and instead of using bread they used ready rolled puff pastry. Oil the inside of the sandwich toaster to prevent the pastry from sticking. I've never tried it as I don't have a sandwich toaster.

What kind of sandwiches apart from cheese are really good toasted? What do you like best?

We have a Breville - does sandwiches and paninis- in use almost every day. Small, light and easy to clean as surfaces are flat - no ridges. Very quick to heat too. Much better than old style sandwich maker.

I’ve got this one too, it’s brilliant, and so easy to clean, use it all the time.

If it is cheese toasties you want, buy the bags that go in the toaster. So much quicker and less messy

I've got one and like you love toasted sandwiches.
I would suggest a deep one if you want to put things in it like beans.
I can only get grated cheese and slices of tomato in mine but that what I like.
You can buy them at supermarkets.

It's got 5 star ratings. If you look at the picture it has lines. I think they all do and the edges seal.
When you butter the bread you have to put the buttered sides against the metal. if you don't it will stick. Like an inside out sandwich.
Like you, I've scalded my mouth so don't be too eager.

Have had this for a few years. Plates come out and can be hand washed. Tend to use panini plates most but sandwich maker plates are good too. I’ve never tried the waffle plate to my shame😱

(but you do have to weigh them down with a metal grid)

I gave mine away - just too difficult to clean and store - then made them in a frying pan until I got my air fryer. It makes such lovely crunchy ones.

I also use a George Foreman grill, a small ridged version not much bigger than a large slice of bread.
The following method of cleaning has left it looking as new, don't know whether it works on sandwich toasters: While still hot, turn off and sandwich a few layers of wet kitchen paper between the plates and close. By the time you have eaten your meal it can be wiped clean with the paper towel.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. Embarrassed to say I had a large George Foreman for a gift once, I didn’t like the way it cooked steak so I gave it away but never thought of using it for sarnies 🙄 but that was about 10 years ago, before my current toasted sarnie obsession. I’ve looked at reviews but it’s so confusing when you get loads of 5 stars then the 1 and 2 stars say don’t touch it, load of rubbish. So I was hoping for personal recommendations from anybody who rates theirs highly.

has anyone used the george foreman grill for anything else?
