Kindle.

I had an original Kindle after recommendations from Mamie and others, I couldn’t imagine ever changing from real books but spending more time abroad and with local library problems in England, I was getting desperate.

Now I can’t imagine not having my Paperwhite, although I find the apps on iPad and phone useful as well. It’s much easier to decide which book I want to read next on the iPad for instance.
What I really miss is the good book shop we use to have locally. Fiction and books that I will want to refer to again are easier in ‘real book’ format. Nothing will ever beat my “Sunset Garden” reference book.

I don't understand why the Paperwhites are so popular! I have a Kindle Fire and a Paperwhite, but I only use the Paperwhite when I want to read outside in the sunshine (days that I can count on the fingers of one hand!)
The Fire has the advantages that it is full colour and can be used on the internet - so checking e-mails, googling, online newspapers etc. This is in addition to being able to read the books of course. And it is cheaper! What am I missing??

Paperwhite for me too when travelling. Loaded up and good to go. Paper books at home. Kindle is rubbish for poetry though I prefer to flip backwards and forwards and lose my place too easily!

I have an Oasis after my old Kindle conked out after 11 years. I love it. I agree that the feel of an actual book is good, but my eyesight is not so keen now and I can up the font to make it easy to read, especially as I often awake in the middle of the night. The back light is very gentle.
I chose the Oasis as you can link it to bluetooth and listen to Audio books (with ear phones}. It is possible my eyesight will deteriorate in the future.

I buy a lot of actual books too!

I have had a kindle for years (Paperwhite I think) and love it. I visit Australia a lot - well I did - and would have four or five books in my hand luggage. Now I simply take my kindle which has over 200 books on it. I have also copied it onto my iPad. My kindle has a built in light and a nice leather cover. Oh, and it’s easier to read in bed.

I might add that I also use my Kindle Fire tablet as reader. While the Paperwhite is charging, I can read the same book on the Fire and one picks up where the other leaves off,

I too have a Kindle Paperwhite which is my best purchase during Lockdown. I’ve been known to stroke it like a cat.? I too have a lovely colourful cover.

It is not either Kindle or books. It is both. My Kindle slips in my handbag. I read it when sttuck in queues, in the dentist/doctors surgery, when travelling, when I wake in the night because I can read it without disturbing DH.

It is good for novels but pretty useless of anything that requires you to see an illustration in detail and/or while reading text. Do not even start me on reading books with tables in them.

However nothing will match the multisensory experience of a book, its feel, its smell, the ability to flip through it to find something, move from one part to another and back, look at pictures and illustrations.

The Paperwhite seems very popular! I've got a very old, very basic Kindle (bought second hand off ebay at least 8 years ago). It doesn't have a back light but despite it's shortcomings I love it and wouldn't be without it. I've got Anazon Prime and can download some books for free although the selection is not as good as paid-for books. I also take advantage of the Kindle Daily Deals and the monthly First Reads. I use it everyday and, in spite of its age the battery lasts forever.

I have a paper white , I read it in bed so the bedside light doesn’t disturb DH. I take it with me everywhere it’s handy if you’re kept waiting.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite, which I love. I've also joined Kindle Unlimited for £7.99 a month. You can have up to ten books on your Paperwhite at any one time and they are all free! Not as many books available on Unlimited, but still loads and more added all the time. When you've read one, you just return it to Kindle Unlimited (on your Kindle) and then you can get another. Well worth it for me, as I read at least two or three books per week (I am a very fast reader!)

Another vote for the Paperwhite ?. Also good for slipping into handbag when going to hospital (or other) appts which might take a while.

I purchased my Kindle Paper White at the start of first lockdown as I dropped my previous Kindle on a hard tiled floor and it broke! I don't why I had it out of the case! My DH's response right away was get a new one as he knew lockdown for me without my reading would be dreadful (libraries and charity shops were shut). I am very happy with the Paper White, I support all the positive points made above, plus you can download samples of books free of charge - a great way to try out new authors.

I love my kindle paper white - for its portability (slips easily into my small handbag), for reading in bed and for when I travel. I look for kindle book deals, but also love it when I get an Amazon voucher fir birthday or Xmas and treat myself to something I might otherwise think too expensive!. I have hundreds of paperbacks at home but find paper books quite heavy to hold now!

My Paperwhite is great. I can listen to audiobooks on it too. I also have the app on my phone for a quick read if I’m waiting unexpectedly.
There are still some books you just can’t get as ebooks, so I have to buy those occasionally.

DH and I both have Paperwhite Kindles, his is more modern than mine. I tend to mainly read books when at home but the Kindle is great for travelling and holidays. DH will only ever read on Kindle.

I would recommend the Paperwhite as it can be read in direct sunlight and the print can be made as large as you feel comfortable with.

My Paperwhite is about eight years old now and needs re-charging quite frequently. I'd like to replace it sooner rather than later. I appreciate the fact that I can enlarge the font. Some print books are hard to read because of small print and cramped line spacing. I picked up my old copy of Mansfield Park recently and wondered how I ever managed to read it - but then I was in my teens or early 20s.

The Kindle is brilliant for travellers, you don’t have to lug heavy books around. Also, if you have visual problems, you can blow the text up really large. My DH had it set up so there were only a few words per page.
I find the downsides are with books with footnotes, diagrams, pictures and maps. Better in an actual book, especially with the footnotes where you can easily flip to the back or chapter end to see them. I tend to keep the Kindle for fiction and patronise a bookshop for the rest. I’m referring to my old original Kindle here, I don’t know whether the newer models are better.
I prefer the Kindle to my iPad as my Kindle isn’t backlit and is kinder to my migraine prone brain.

Had it for years now, wouldn't be without it.
Read a "normal" book recently, so heavy and my wrist objected strongly!

I had a very old Kindle and decided to upgrade it to a Paperwhite as the battery didn't hold a charge for long.

However, I do prefer the old one as I found it more controllable with buttons to click. The new one is a touch screen one ie swipe to turn the page etc and it seems to have a mind of its own.

The proper leather cover, which cost about £35, felt rough and was not pleasant to use so I exchanged it for a cheaper flip style cover.

I'm reading a thick paperback which someone lent me at the moment and it seems really heavy compared to the Kindle.

My son has a Kindle paperwhite. He really likes it. It has a back light so that you can read in all light conditions.
Do you really need a Kindle? I have the Kindle app on my Samsung tablet. I'm currently reading a Terry Pratchett book on it. If you have a tablet already in my opinion there is really no reason to buy another device .

And another Paperwhite owner here. I love real books, but as someone else has said, the Kindle is perfect for reading in bed as it's so much lighter and you don't need to disturb anyone by having a light on. Plus, I'm a very fast reader, so it's ideal for taking on holiday, as I have as many books as I want right at my fingertips without having to worry about the weight.
