What are these orange stains that have appeared on my hands overnight?
(471 Posts)This happened first about 3 weeks ago and I thought it was because I had handled a Satsuma. It wouldn't wash off but disappeared over 24 hours. Then I woke up this morning to find dark iodine coloured stains down my index finger and light orange blotches on both palms and on the back of my thumb. I have googled this and nobody seems to know what it is so I am wondering if anyone on gn has come across this?
Hello everyone, I think I have this orange stain as well, idk if I should be worried haha
I work in construction so I thought It was rust but it doesn’t go away even if I brush and anything
Have a nice one
Hi all! I had a weird rust stain situation I (38M) wanted to share to propose a different potential solution. I went on a hike and have developed a really intense red stain very similar to you all. While hiking I picked up a walking stick and got a little wet in the rain, since then I have developed a deep red stain that will NOT come out. Images to prove below. But I kept the walking stick and found a really wild orange lichen on it, note how my stain is exactly like the shape of the walking stick! This doesn’t fit perfectly for all of you, but maybe touching dead, rotting wood with wet hands is a common occurrence for some of us. Thanks all, I was totally enthralled with this thread!
Just started this account to stay in the loop as I also woke up with a mysterious orange stain on my left palm, between my thumb and pointer finger. It won't wash off. Like someone else said, I also had a metallic taste in my mouth yesterday (it's almost gone now). Last night I had green grapes and I washed them by hand with a veggie wash (which may be expired now that I think of it). I also came into contact yesterday with a variety of popcorn seasoning. This is very strange and I'm eager to learn if anyone finds the cause of this! I'm a 48 year old female, by the way.
Hello! I am 28 years old and I made here an account to share my orange spots on hands. I am from Romania. I woke up with these on my hands today, i had experienced these kind of things a few years ago but it not bothered me so i let them be. I didnt eat carrots or pepper, i didnt get a tan or anything everyone mentioned. I think is is so bizzare that anyone cannot explain these things.
Created an account to add my experience to the group, 28f, UK.
Woke up with the orange stains on both hands and faded photo is around 4 hours after the first photos.
Like many people I had eaten raw carrots the day before and think I was stressed as was clenching my hands when I woke up.
Saw a nurse who had no idea and just said I must have accidentally dyed my hands at home.
I came here as I faced something similar, crazy colouring on my hands, going to the doctors on Wednesday but from the looks of it here I doubt they will work out what's going on
Same. Not a clue what it is. My doctor said to keep an eye on it. 🙄 I take photos so they’re dated and can refer back to them. When I’ve got a bundle I’ll take them to the doctor again. I read somewhere it can be a sign of thyroidism or leaky blood vessels.
You've come to the wrong room LucyV1961, go down the hallway and it's the third door on the right, just after the lifts …
😁
What???
Hello, did anybody watch Passenger in 6 parts, was anybody surprised at the ending.Did anybody understand what was going on.
I discovered a new one today as well :D I was convinced it was a coffee stain or I stepped in cat poop 🤣
Me again. Didn't write for quite I while, I'd say a year or two.
This appeared overnight. Meanwhile, I read that paper that someone linked with the Covid-related issue. I recently ended up in a hospital having pulmonary embolism related to Covid or vaccine, so after all that stress, this seems like sth immunity-related perhaps. Again, doctors just say it's nothing.
So here's an update in pics. I love this weird place.
Created account to join the orange stain club. I noticed a comment from 2021 where a woman and her partner had the same orange staining at the same time. I woke up today with an orange / iodine stain on my index finger. My wife and I thought it was weird but I went to golf and forgot about it. I came home this evening and my wife has the same iodine stains on the sole of her right foot.
We have both recently started to take vitamin supplements. Omega 3 and vitamin D and wife takes pregnancy multi vit. No real notable changes in diets.
I think the fact we both have it at the same time would indicate we’ve either eaten something or it’s a weird virus. Can’t see it as serious underlying health problem unless it’s a bizarre coincidence.
Did you ever figure out what it is?
I too woke up with strange orange stains on my left hand. I honestly thought I touched something rusty so I scrubbed and nothing. I have read through all comments on here tonight and I e noticed carrots come up a lot. I had just a very little bit of raw carrots in a salad today for the first time I a while at my grandmothers funeral. Maybe it is the food we eat. Anyone have any updates? I just worry it’s something to do with the liver. I am a 33 year old female, and I don’t have not been vaccinated.
Hey all! I’m so thankful for this thread because I know I’m not alone. Several doctors have no clue what’s happening. My orange stain started as streaks mid January and have continued on re-appearing 2-3x a week and “retreat” or lighten every few days before emerging again overnight. The pattern and intensity varies but it’s always on my right hand and starts in the “webbing” between my thumb and pointer finger. At one point it looked like it was dripping all the way down my forearm. Also, on one of the worst days, basically my whole thumb was orange (photo below) and it smells exactly like tanning cream! Like a burnt sugar smell. To echo many people on this thread, no I do not use tanning cream or use anything that would cause a stain. I don’t sleep walk. There are no stains in my bed or anywhere else on my body. I don’t use any creams or serums with vitamin c, no prescription drugs, no diet changes, no medication or supplement changes. It’s like it came out of nowhere. I had blood work done and results were nothing out of the ordinary except my vitamin D was really low.
The only thing I can think of is that I did touch a pine tree while I was foraging some pine needles a few days to a week (can’t recall time frame for sure) before it first appeared and maybe it’s fungal or something from the tree? But does fungus come and go like this?
I’ve looked at photos of tinea versicolor and other tinea fungal infections and it doesn’t look like what I’m experiencing.
I’m meeting with a rheumatologist in a few days so we will see if it’s autoimmune related. I’ll post any updates here.
Oh wow 5 years chucks! I just woke up with it this morning and it made me call off because it scared me lol..
Just made an account to comment. Went to urgent care and honestly was useless... Just come back if it dont go away. I started taking a supplement and have made 3 protein shakes with banana this week. Just wondering if anyone ever found out what causes this.
So relieved to read so many other people have been having this occur to them as well.... I feel like I am going crazy some days with this staining.. I have been getting it on and off for about 5 or so years now (it appears on the soles of my feet and on my hands (in particular my palms and inside my fingers). I have been to a specialist doctor and he ran a bunch of tests and I am still no closer to figuring it out. It remains a mystery.. Hopefully someone here is able to get some more answers for us all.....
Hey guys joining the gang here 😅26 F Woke up around 2 days ago with these stains on my hands, on the first day it was more on my left and not so much on the right and now it’s on the right which you can see here and completely gone from my left? Washing doesn’t help no matter what I use. I’ve felt really tired lately I think someone else mentioned a similar thing. I have had this exact thing before but not sure what’s caused it. I normally do eat a lot of tomatoes etc but lately not much at all. I have handled Amazon boxes though.
Aditya that may be right for you but not for the rest of us. When mine appears it is not from a burn. Plus it often isn’t just in one spot - have a look at other posters photos. We have established it is internal not external but are still trying to work out exactly how it manifests. So far we think diet, stress and hormone related but not sure of the correlation.
Okay guys i have read all you conversions and reply till the date.
And even i got that orange spot on my finger yesterday, i would just like to say is that recall what you did the time the day or before you got that spot. For me thes answer is simple i had burnt matchstick to lighten up a lamp and i held the matchstick till the very bottom and almost burnt my finger and thumb.
and the same day evening I developed the orange spot on the exact place from where my finger and thumb almost burnt.
At last i will just say there is a simple reason to cause it which might have triggered near the same area where your spots are

But I have eaten nothing strange nothing different I'm completely bewildered
For some reason it suddenly appears. You could well have eaten foods that contain carotene in the past with no effect, which is why I thought there was another element which could be stress. Stress can alter hormones which could be the catalyst. That’s the best explanation we’ve come up with so far. It doesn’t seem to be harmful and disappears in a few days.
