What are these orange stains that have appeared on my hands overnight?

This happened first about 3 weeks ago and I thought it was because I had handled a Satsuma. It wouldn't wash off but disappeared over 24 hours. Then I woke up this morning to find dark iodine coloured stains down my index finger and light orange blotches on both palms and on the back of my thumb. I have googled this and nobody seems to know what it is so I am wondering if anyone on gn has come across this?

Definitely not tinea nigra, very different colour. This is orange ish and like you’ve touched something that had a bit of dye on it. I went to bed with clean hands last night and woke up with these. Yesterday I didn’t go outside, have no plants, no bugs, no dye, ate no carotene or citrus foods. Did and ate nothing out of the ordinary. I’m in lockdown so my life is limited to 3 rooms and little to no variation in routine or environment.

Carotenosis.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carotenosis

So, like most people in this thread, I have woken up or during the course of the day, went from having no stains, to having fingertips and splotches of my palms colored orange.

It has only happened in the last 2 months, and I just got a confirmation from my Diabetic nurse on what was going on.

As I was recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, I underwent a complete overhaul on what I eat, in order to be more in line with managing the diabetes.
In the course of doing that, I have started eating more Egg, cheese and bell peppers.

With this change, plus the underlying conditions that I have, where I am likely to cause excess amount of carotenoids, which is the cause of the outermost skin layer getting tainted. For darker skinned people, the soles will likely also show the taint effect, as the Wikipedia entry states.

So there are two ways of getting this - over consumption of food that have high carotenoid content (list in wiki page), or underlying medical conditions that can cause an increase despite normal intake of the food.

In the end, Carotenosis is harmless, unless you are addicted to having perfect skin tone. smile

Hello everyone! Just signed up because I figure this is the unofficial OMG-my-hands-are-orange-help Club.
I’m a 33 year old from Portugal and last week a couple of spots showed up. After trying to wash them off I figured it had something to do with a carrot cake I had a few days earlier.
The morning after It had completely changed the spots layout and they were much bigger. I freaked out and went to the doctor ASAP.
The dummy tells me it’s ink!
Seeing as I’m a tattoo artist I explained to him that I know good and well what ink is and what isn’t. I pressed him a bit about other possible causes but he just dismissed me.
The next few days the spots came and went, always changing places and sizes.
Today my girlfriend calls me stressed out. Turns out she has some spots of her own now. But here’s the thing, whatever it is, it happens during the night. I’ve even wondered if it’s some kind of bug or creepy fungus in the mattress or somehting.
Anyway let’s keep the ball rolling here, there are bound to be answers to this thing. Cheers everyone!

Carotenemia?

25Avalon Wed 04-Aug-21 13:09:51

Areid we’re still trying to puzzle it out in the absence of medical knowledge. Do have a good read of previous posts and let us know if you slot in to any of the possible causes put forward.

I have the same stain which is strange , it just popped up yesterday.. mines has a wierd smell to it . Smell like old pee … does anyone have any idea what this thing is

I did meet someone years ago who said she was addicted to carrots and her skin kept turning orange; she had been to her GP for help, but she was buying bags of them in the supermarket.

Beta-carotene is also in green leafy vegetables, apricots, sweet peppers, lots of fruit and vegetables, 25Avalon

You haven't touched lilies have you?

The pollen stains horribly and won't come out of curtains, clothing etc.

They are also very poisonous to cats and dogs.

I am so glad I started this thread and that so many people have responded. Maybe between us we can work something out but it’s reassuring to know there are many of us.

Someone on JustAnswer asked if it was related to hypothyroidism. They woke up with orange/brown stains on their hands. The health professional asked if they ate carrots, squash, spinach, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, beans, egg yolks, and or yams. The person said they ate littleof these but were told beta carotene is in many other foods including lettuce. Apparently if you have hypothyroidism it slows down the breakdown of beta carotene. The stain tends to show up in areas where sweat glands are more concentrated such as the palms of the hands.

I am not suggesting any of us suffer from hypothyroidism but I am wondering if it could also be stress related as some have suggested. Maybe stress stops us breaking down beta carotene so well so if we have eaten foods that contain it, perhaps more than usual and are stressed it has this effect?

I've kept a diary of my finger staining which has happened 4 times since April. As someone who suffers from bouts of anxiety, it seems this is the most likely cause.

My diet on preceding days seems to having no correlation to the stains appearing (I eat a wide variety of things).

Most notably - the stains seem to appear after particularly stressful periods. Sometimes the day before was not so bad, so it may be a delayed response. For example I have it now after working hard on a uni assessment in the previous week.

Well if it’s on your pyjama trousers then it’s an outside thing dying you not something you ve ingested

Tilly8484 Sat 31-Jul-21 01:41:08

This is the arma force I’ve been taking

Tilly8484 Sat 31-Jul-21 01:39:56

I’ve stumbled across this forum and joined so I could comment, because I’ve woken up with the same dilemma this morning and obviously freaked out!

So mine is mostly all on one hand and it also transferred onto my pyjama pants and through to my leg where my palm laid under my leg during the night. Some residue washed away in the shower but the stains still remain. It has a weird sweet smell to it. Like powdered cocoa or hot chocolate powder. The bedroom were I slept also had a this weird sweet smell to it as well.

I have started eating more tomatoes than usual but I’ve never had an issue with tomatoes before and for the last three days I’ve been taking two armaforce tablets (bottle says take one a day but I’ve taken two a day). I’ve posted a picture of the bottle. That’s all I could think of in terms of something different to my diet recently. I touch fruit and vegetables daily, always have done.

I’m 37/f/not pregnant and live in Sydney

Same thing just happened to me this morning. At first I thought it was oil from the engine, but I only removed a spark plug and this was two days ago and I did not have it yesterday. My gf thought it was weird this morning too.

I did catch a June bug with my bare hand yesterday. Maybe it pee'd on my hand idk

Mechant sounds very much like it is carotenemia or lycopenemia the same as me especially as it is now fading. Hopefully it will go completely soon. Should you get it again check what you have eaten and then avoid it!

Mechent Mon 05-Jul-21 08:51:32

Ahhh yes I ate yellow capsicum (bell pepper) and a few mandarins yesterday evening. It has faded alot from 12 hours ago. No other symptoms =)

25Avalon Mon 05-Jul-21 08:36:43

Merchant I understand carotenemia can affect feet as well as hands. It’s caused by too much Vitamin A and is found not only in carrots but also sweet potatoes, squash, citrus fruits, apricots and even green vegetables. Have you been eating more of these just lately? In my case as soon as I worked out it was red Romano peppers and stopped eating them I haven’t had it since. I did find it fades within a few days. If you are worried and if you have any other symptoms such as headaches etc then it may be best to see a doctor.

Somehow I don’t think it’s Schamburger’s disease as that affects the legs as well but I am not a doctor.

Mechent Sun 04-Jul-21 23:12:44

It could possible be Schamberg's disease? The condition is caused by inflammation of capillaries near the surface of skin and subsequent leaking of red blood cells into surrounding tissues. As the red blood cells break down and get mostly resorbed, some of the iron released by the red blood cells remains in the skin and causes the characteristic rust-colored appearance. The cause of the capillary inflammation is usually unknown.

Mechent Sun 04-Jul-21 21:38:19

25Avalon it is so strange? I read somewhere it may be too much vitaman A in your system? What do you think?

25Avalon Sun 04-Jul-21 20:37:04

Mechent it is a weird thing and so difficult to find any info. I seem to remember it could be to do with being pregnant as well. I too old for that don’t know about you.

Mechent Sun 04-Jul-21 20:14:51

Woah!! Look at my feet! Have the same thing on my fingers but my feet are insanely rusty colored! Read all the posts on here and none of these fit within the reasons why I would have this. So strange!

25Avalon Tue 29-Jun-21 12:12:38

For God’s sake do not scrub your hands with bleach. It will NOT remove the stain as it is NOT a stain. It is NOT lily pollen or the stain from scrapping potatoes. It is caused by something internal, most likely that you have eaten. Seeing the GP is not particularly helpful either as few GP’s know what it is.

Read up on carotenemia and lycopenemia. There you will find the most likely answer. I googled and researched for months. Read this thread from the beginning especially Cassiesierra18’s posting.
