Well, just that, really. I know that (most) don't wear leather shoes, obviously you can only get leather from a dead animal (ooh, just thought, they could have garments made from snakeskin, providing it had been shed/sloughed)
But what about wool?
Kevin and Katie are the alpacas? And you ate them Jalima? How could you!

They're not very big
Kevin and Katie were very tasty btw
I saw a day out advertised for alpaca trekking. I thought I would get to ride one, but you walk alongside them.
I think the alpacas I mentioned are in complete charge of my friends too!
I don't exploit my cat. I think he exploits me. Sleeps 23 hours a day an eats the rest of the time.
Suffering succotash! gillybob (to quote Yosemite Sam.) Succotash is a complete protein source and suitable for vegetarians and vegans because it's sweetcorn and butter beans (also known as lima beans) cooked together. There are many recipes online. The trouble is that often the young girls who become vegetarians or vegans, through concern for fluffy baby animals, turn up their noses and won't eat the foods that will replace meat as a protein source. My husband often joked that our daughter was a vegetarian who didn't like vegetables! She still won't eat butter beans and she's 33 years old. However she's no longer vegetarian. (I'm not suggesting that eating succotash is the only way for Vs to get the essential amino acids needed for growth and repair, by the way. I only just recently found out what Yosemite Sam is shouting about!)
On the subject of wearing animal skins or wool, someone on here ages ago described being accosted in the street and verbally abused for wearing faux fur because it mimics wearing real fur. Pleather is surely faux leather so mimics wearing real leather and many man made jumpers are faux wool. They are sometimes worn in the name of fashion as well as, or rather than, practicality. I think, if you're going to harangue someone in the street because you are convinced you are right (as in this case), you should do your homework thoroughly first and only then jump on your soap box. I hasten to add that I don't know any vegetarians or vegans who would do that!
Everything we do has an impact on the environment, to a greater or lesser degree. The best we can do is to try and use ethically sourced products as far as is possible. Personally, I have no bother eating meat, fish and eggs; wearing leather shoes and woollen and linen clothing and benefitting from drugs with animal bi products in them. But if vegans dont want to do that, that's fine. Doesn't make one of us right and the other wrong. Just different.
I've been researching vegan shoes too. It seems that the leather look, waterproof ones are mostly made of polyurethane. Some of the boots are lined with faux wool which is also a man made material. There are concerns about the toxicity of the chemicals needed for the process of binding polymers.
I understand that vegans wouldn't want to wear the skin of dead animals. I have an aversion to it myself especially leather sofas. I don't think they can claim that this is good for the environment though...
Chewbacca, no she doesn't. They are quite old and as our friends are moving they have sold them with the house! I don't spin or else I would have had some fleece from them, it's so soft and warm.
I don´t think that vegans expect sheep to disappear from the mountainsides of Scotland or anywhere else. They just want to add their little bit to the preservation of the Earth. They are mostly young people with ideals, and weren´t we that once? The fact is that with the growing afflluence of the first world, there is a growing demand for beef. Hence, the horrendous destruction of rain forests in South America in order to breed cattle.
I found this company who make and sell footwear, suitable for vegans. Some of their shoes are made out of felted wool

Jalima does your friend kill and eat the alpacas at the end of life, do you know? No idea how long the lifespan of an alpaca is though?
I have a friend who keeps alpacas - much loved pets but they do need shearing and their fleeces are spun and knitted into garments.
They are well cared for, happy and do need to be sheared in the spring to be comfortable.
I guess so, Jalima! It's an intriguing train of thought, to work out how you'd replace everything in your life with natural, non-animal products.
Ah, so they probably wear manufactured shoes which would be waterproof!
Thanks SueDonim, I had visions of them walking barefoot in the snow or carving wooden clogs (which, of course, I can remember people wearing when I was young!).
Oh, x-posted, Jalima. I honestly don't know what they wear on their feet. As I say, it's the daughter of a friend of a friend so not anyone I know personally.
Jalima wrt the manmade thing, what I meant is that the couple I'm aware of won't use anything not natural, rather than not man-made. Obviously even clothes made from cotton are made by (wo)man! Btw, when we lived in Africa, local people wore footwear made from old tyres, which I assume are still made from rubber.
I've got this horrible flu so sorry for being muddle-headed!
sorry to ask again about their shoes SueDonim - I am just really curious.
I am not criticising anyone's choices, just interested as we have vegetarians in the family but no vegans; I would not want any vegans to start feeling defensive.
How dare they? Vegans taking up beds that should be left for meat eaters.
Has anyone actually suggested anything of the kind? Or is this just a reactionary rhetorical question?
My point was that this couple eschew manmade materials but put aside their principles when having their baby.
Sorry Wilma I was trying to answer in the same vein, as I had just taken out a couple of carrots to cook along with broccoli and peas.
If we were all vegetarians or vegans there would be no animals in fields. Farmers don't keep animals just to make the countryside look nice. Where would our children and grandchildren get to know about animals - zoos are taboo too now!
Okay, Jalima, what do you suggest vegans wear on their feet?
I am assuming that you are not trying to be confrontational with that post
I can't suggest anything really djen that's why I am asking; did you read the original post about the vegan couple who will not wear anything man-made either?
I was curious about what they wear on their feet if not shoes made by man (or woman) especially in a chilly part of the world, as vegan shoes must have been made using some type of a process by man (or woman).
