Degree present

My husband bought me a brooch to wear for each graduation - women need to pin the point of the hood to their clothes. How about a good handbag? Probably the best idea is to tell her roughly how much you wanting to spend and ask her what she needs.

When I got my degree 2 years ago with the OU my sister bought me a voucher for a lovely celebration weekend for my husband and myself as although I was awarded the degree he had supported me financially and kept me going in the tough study times. Perhaps a lovely meal for your Grandaughter and her family reflecting the same sentiments. You must be very proud of her.

As they have been struggling financially maybe it should be something they've had to skimp on? Or something frivolous ? Definitely personal .

Dependent on your budget maybe an overnight stay in a boutique hotel where she can admire the Interior Design in the lap of luxury ?

Moneyboss - I do know that if someone is coping with tight finances they can find an unsolicited extravagant present rather annoying....especially if the money could have been spent on something more pressing.

I'd go down the something small and indulgent as a token...and then a voucher for something the whole family could enjoy.
My DD has to cope with a limited budget....something she does magnificently.....so I tend to buy small presents for birthdays etc and then give a cheque 'for the holiday fund'.

I think ,in the circumstances , a cheque for " the holiday fund " might be best .A nice photo frame for the Graduation photo could be a nice permanent memento

All good ideas, thanks. She's since told me she's saving for an Ipad Pro then she can do some work from home. My budget won't stretch that far so think a cheque is the way to go, with an owl or butterfly brooch for her to keep.

Moneyboss, that sounds like an excellent idea. It is lovely to buy people presents to mark an occasion, we have a lovely independent craft shop locally and any excuse I have to buy something quirky and personal is taken.....but I do appreciate that its often the unromantic or mundane that is more important to youngsters struggling to make ends meet.

Oh dear I'm back on the naughty parent step! I t never occurred to me to buy DD anything when she got her degree, or when she got her PhD - although I did do an awful lot of typing for the PhD. I was rather miffed that I was the only person in my class not to get a present when I passed the 11 plus because my mother thought it was bribery.

Didn't occur to me either, when the DC got their degrees, we simply congratulated them, isn't it enough?

We all went out to a very smart restaurant with both ours after the degree ceremony. Ang excuse for a family get together and knees up!

GS just texted me if he could come over and celebrate the end of GCSEs with a bonfire of revision papers and fireworks.

Of course he can. So they will all troop over plus girl friend. We will have a chinese takeaway and much merriment.

I didn't know about graduation gifts until I saw the beautiful Royal Doulton figurine my Step-dad bought for my Step-sister when she got her nursing degree years ago. Figurines are not really my thing, but this was done in a a contemporary style and I loved it.

I tried to find a picture of it online, but I think it's too long ago now. There's lots of styles though and if you go on Etsy you could get something personalised.
