I agree that they're old enough to cope at that age. We left our 18 year old in charge of his 15 year old brother to go to Florida years ago - my parents were just round the corner so we knew if there were any problems they were on hand but they were fine. The following year the elder one had left home and was living with his girlfriend - we left the younger one on his own again with my parents nearby - with the exception of a blue ink stain on my white sofa courtesy of a mate sleeping on it with a leaky pen in his pocket the house was in tact when we got back. Both times they were asked if they wanted to go with us but refused.

Small things that make you feel happy




We knew they were reasonably sensible and trustworthy and had a couple of neighbours on high alert keeping a beady eye out for them. They had relatives ten minutes away in case of emergency. They still managed to sneak a small party past the sentries, but apart from a few dodgy stains on the carpet, no harm was done. They didn't miss us at all. I missed them, of course
