I'll answer my own question - she can't win for her character in Downton as that was first aired years ago...

As it says film, TV or drama, i would nominate Judi Dench for Philomena. Unless they mean a TV film - not quite sure if I have got the right end of the stick.

If its a character rather than the actor.....then for me its got to be Kirster Henrickson's Wallander. A man of a certain age who has made mistakes but tries his best at being a father and grandfather. He has a demanding job that leaves him little time for himself. He craves love, and still manages to win the occasional lady over. Now he is facing, what looks like dementia, and his bleak expression of confusion and loss towards his daughter in the car, in last week's episode was heartbreakingly true. Yes, its a depressing thought but a truthful representation of a caring, intelligent older character battling with dementia is a very brave and inspiring dramatic choice.
