Granny Squares to Wearable Garment (Novice) Advice Please

A throw or blanket would be easier than a garment, but you could do a simple kimono style jacket in a simple T shape. There’s always a poncho too - but would you wear it?

My mother made me an amazing waistcoat in the 70s using crochet squares. I loved it, and waistcoats are ‘in’ this winter!

I'd crochet them together but that's because I dislike sewing.

Many years ago I had a sort of sleeveless jacket that was knitted. I always thought of it as a waistcoat at the time but it was quite square in shape with a round neck and toggles down the front to fasten it. It didn't have shaped armholes either, just straight.

Depending on your skills it might be possible to slightly round off the neckline?

My sister made me a blanket, so warm and cosy.

In the 1970s we made waistcoats of them by sewing the squares together then crocheting and edge round the neckline the open fronts and the lower edges.

If you google waistcoat of granny squares you can find some good pictures - there is even a jacket with sleeves, there.

I learned to knit a couple of years ago - but I still can't follow a pattern 😕 However, I cobbled myself a jumper out of rectangles! Two for the front, two for the back, one for the neck and one each (folded over ) for the sleeves. I received many compliments on it!

I knitted myself a gorgeous polo neck sweater, camel colour, blackberry stitch, during several months of commuting by rail in the mid-1970s. I wore it three times before shrinking it beyond salvation in the launderette.

I knitted just one set of baby mittens and bootees, 33 years ago for my youngest (her generation don’t want them for their own babies)… but since then, just a lot of neck warmers (infinity scarf / snood type) and beanie hats. I might now be inspired to try another jumper!

One of the news readers, BBC or ITV, was wearing a crochet waistcoat.

I made a giletof granny squares in the seventies. Worn of a black polo neck I felt very trendy and cool.
