Watercolour painting

I love your painting Purplepixie. Thank you for sharing. I do enjoy watercolours but unfortunately I’m not that good on paper. I was pleased with my miniatures painted on ‘ivorine’. One was an owl and the other was a landscape.
Have you tried watercolour paint on Yupo paper LauraNorderr? It’s water resistant so you can move the paint around and take it off if necessary. I enjoyed playing about with it, but I don’t think I’ll ever paint a masterpiece.

I do like the idea of dropping some paint on the paper and chasing it around with a straw. After I've practised that I shall do it with the grandchildren. But this aside, I've been meaning to get on and paint for ages.

My FIL who died many years ago was an enthusiastic painter. He had made his own easels and had a high quality set of brushes, which I kept with every intention to use and paint with.

I think I will follow the advice of others on this thread to look up an online tutorial or two.

Yes, it is definitely down to practice. I hadn’t painted for years and I went through a few days of just throwing the paint on the paper and watching just where it landed. Very interesting. Also my youngest son used to drop paint on the paper and chase it around with a straw. The shapes were fabulous and I still have some of his paintings. Just enjoy it and don’t expect a masterpiece every time - that was the advice from an artist (professional) friend of mine.

I definitely think that practice makes perfect, once you have mastered the basics. Even the great masters practised day after day after hour after hour to get to the sort of stuff we see. Look at De Vinci’s drawings of the body etc.

There are a lot of tutorials on line that you can dip in and out of.

Years ago I used to attend tutorial classes in a local village and we spent a full on day (picnic lunch) painting one piece. I learnt so much there.

I’m not very good as I simply don’t do enough, but it doesn’t really matter as I love just sitting doing it.

Jane I agree. It’s not a very forgiving medium, but perhaps the most difficult thing to bear in mind is that watercolour paint will dry a couple of shades lighter than what you put on the paper, so you have to go dark to compensate for that. It’s a lesson I have never quite got the hang of!

That is so beautiful. You’re very talented. My father was a good artist, used to paint on blown hens eggs too. I would love to, but have no talent. Still always love looking at others works. Both my DGS and DN are very good at art.

It is a lovely painting. I find watercolour quite difficult and it's so difficult to come back from if you go too dark

trisher I am glad that I have inspired you. I hadn’t painted in such a long time but I had been knitting quite a bit. Especially dog/cat blankets for Battersea. So far I have knitted over one hundred and they have acknowledged me as one of their top knitter! I am chuffed to bits. Take care and happy painting!

Lovely painting Purplepixie and thanks for this thread I haven't painted for sometime but I'm going to start again. I can't do watercolours I'm too messy. I prefer acrylics and I sometimes venture into pastels. Going to dig out all my stuff now.

I always use 200lb NOT Cold pressed paper and have never stretched it. Maybe try a different type of paper. If I get the paper too wet then I just dry it off a bit with kitchen paper. I hope this helps.

Can I have a bit of advice please Purplepixie.
My paper always ends up corrugated no matter how well I stretch and tape, even with a good thick quality paper. Am I making it too wet? Any tips?
I stick to acrylic for two reasons, one being the corrugated paper problem and two the fact that you can’t cover mistakes with water colour and I’m not nearly good enough not to make mistakes.

Grandmabatty I think your robin is really good. I am having another go at it this afternoon after a couple of disastrous attempts. Anyway the christmas cake is in the oven cooking away as we speak. Back to relaxation.

I go to art club and I have done a few watercolours that I’m sort of pleased with. Usually they end up in the bin, but I love trying and find it very therapeutic.

I love your winter watercolour Purplepixie! I am not very good with watercolours. Here's a robin I'm working on in acrylic paint. I have a bit to do to it yet.
