I cook, my husband doesn’t, food is something that just appears miraculously, he however does clear away.

This is not too bad as we have a dishwasher!

For some bizarre reason he always leaves something out either on the draining board or the worktop.

Last night it was a sieve, coffee cup and a chefs knife.

Why?

Just clear it all away.

AIBU?

Yes, my DH does all of this and will also go into bedroom to get something out of wardrobe or drawer and then leave them all open. I don’t say anything because on the rare occasions I have he gets into a huff🤷🏻‍♀️

My husband cooks more than me which is lovely. Clearing the dishwasher though he often takes out the clean dishes and leaves them for me to put away. He’s lived in the house as long as I have and knows where things go. I just put it away and don’t say anything. It never bothers me.

My husband picks up my coffee cup and clears it away ...half full of coffee ...

Does he think you're a servant there to wait on him hand and foot? You have to stop enabling him

Sago If you always clear up after him, he will never realise a need to clear up. It happens by magic and there's a dishwasher fairy (you). I do think it's a man thing.

My son does most of the cooking. Whatever he used he just puts down. If he empties a packet, it's left where he used it. He produces the meal. I clear up after we've eaten.

When I cook, I clear up as I go. Things I've used go either in the dishwasher or there's a bowl of hot water, on the go, for things that can't go in (i.e. my inherited bone handled knives, good quality kitchen knives etc.)

I like to sit down to eat with a cleared up kitchen but it annoys my son if I clear up things he hasn't finished using. Cooking is a single minded activity for him and he simply doesn't notice the mess he makes. I'm grateful for his cooking so I don't moan.

My late MIL used to come and stay with us. She used to dry up the dishes and leave them all along the worktops. Plates, cups, saucepans, cheese grater, Just everything!

If I stay with DS and his family I try to help but I know my son is particular about the way the dishwasher is stacked so I leave that to him. When it is done I put things away if I know where they go and tell him if I've left a few things behind as I don't want to put them in the wrong cupboards or drawers. It can be a bit of a minefield so I'm guessing she wanted to help but didn't know where things went.
Obviously with time I'm getting to know where most things go but I have been known to remove things from the dishwasher and add them to the hand washed items on the draining rack!

My husband has a complete inability to follow visual cues. I often order stationery for his workplace and leave it very obviously on the table for him to take. But if I’m not around to actually put this ream of paper or 5 rolls of sellotape in his hand, it will be left. Same with his packed lunch - which he makes himself! I’ve lost count of the number of times he’s had to drive back at lunchtime to get it. I do think this is a man thing. They just don’t seem to have that capacity to look around a room, see what’s in an odd place and act on it.

I have learnt to always do the pots and pans washing up, I like to do them properly myself! I leave the dishwasher loading to him although I always empty it.

Jeanieallergy21 Tue 07-Oct-25 14:27:48

By "too tired" I mean he'd rather slump on the sofa watching TV

Jeanieallergy21 Tue 07-Oct-25 14:26:28

Think yourself lucky he only leaves the odd thing behind! I do most of the cooking and he who doesn't cook (apart from making the odd salad or something simple like canned soup) does the washing up. Except that he's always too tired after dinner to wash up, so the dishes stand overnight. And then if he's out for a walk or something the next day, they stand there all day too! I used to give in and do it myself but not any more - I've even got a couple of extra pans so I can cook the next evening without the previous day's pans being washed! I think we're reverting to being students blush

sago I could have written this . My husband does the same . I have to wipe down the worktops and hang up the t- towels .Put the odd sauce bottle away and place the salt and pepper grinders back . He also cleans the bathroom beautifully but leaves the cleaning stuff on the window sill or on the side of the hand-wash basin or bath . I have to finish it . Why ? God only knows lol but I'm glad he helps , a friends husband won't even make a cup of tea .

You'd miss the annoying things if you didn't have him any more.

FranP Tue 07-Oct-25 14:01:21

I would leave them there.

Now that is possibly because she does not want to go into YOUR cupboards and invade your space. My grandma used to get cross if people put things in the "wrong place"

My mother in law always left a tiny amount of potato on her plate after a meal and said it was “for Mr Manners”smile

Applegran Tue 07-Oct-25 13:57:03

I read recently words to the effect - if you want to know how much you love something or someone, imagine not having them. It keeps things in proportion. We can all get caught on something like this but I find it is really worth stepping back and looking at it again in this new light.

Oh dear, me too, I always leave some food seems to me it’s in case anyone wants seconds. A habit from when there were more than two of us here.

I always enjoy Terribull's sense of humour.

Sleepyhead52 Tue 07-Oct-25 13:48:47

So he can eat it later!

Jojo1950 Tue 07-Oct-25 13:47:21

But it’s not!

Jojo1950 Tue 07-Oct-25 13:47:01

Agree!

Jojo1950 Tue 07-Oct-25 13:46:45

Walk Away from it all like I have! Easier that way!

mabon2 Tue 07-Oct-25 13:45:27

Oh for goodness sake if that's all you have to complain about, lucky you.

Sanmrbro Tue 07-Oct-25 13:44:29

Just leave it out.

Have an “Am I bovvered?” attitude. Say nothing. Smile sweetly and do something for you.

I cook and the washing up monitor clears up, this includes washing the plates ready to place them in the dish washer to be washed, I do wonder what the monitor thinks the dishwasher is for I occasionally venture over to the machine to put the odd plate in but I'm not really qualified in the stacking procedure allegedly!, I did have this skill once at some stage I seem to have lost custody of the dishwasher, I have occasional visiting rights sad. One of our sons will wash up as he goes, he likes to cook these days if he's visiting, but leaves everything all over the draining board and prone to use humongous squirts of Fairy, the monitor is prone to declare on seeing the plates and saucepans stacked up, but not put away, "half a job" shock Half a job it might well be, but go back to when he was a teen and beyond, there the dirty dishes would lie ready for the staff me to sort them out.
