I have no objection to the money spent on the wedding, or the press hoohaa. They have the money and are no going to beggar themselves to pay for it.
I just feel that it highlighted how undeserving of it the two participants were. Neither with a proper job or career or any means of support apart from sponging off their parents.

Brooklyn Becham's wedding
(168 Posts)Apparently it cost 3 million pounds.
AIBU to n think that is a crazy amount to spend on a wedding, no matter how rich you are?
I've never been so popular.
Another one here who agrees with Volver
And I’m fed up of hearing about the jubilee already and it’s not even here yet. It will be another show of inappropriate celebration and millions spent on a very privileged family. Meanwhile in Ukraine…..
I agree that it’s their money to spend how they wish, but it’s still ostentatious and vulgar.
I'm having a bit of a chortle to myself. Earlier this week I was obliquely referred to as a communist because I think that you shouldn’t be able to hoard wealth unfairly to pass on to your children after you die. Now we’ve got complaints about self-made people spoiling their children and having lavish weddings and showing off to the rest of us. Even though somebody has given a long list of what the Beckhams do for others and although they didn’t actually pay for the wedding.
I mean, its not like they were expecting parades through central London and street parties with little flags, is it?

I think some celebrities, those who like to put their profile out there, and lots don't, lost the plot during the lockdown, when they displayed the horrors of being cooped up in one of their
sprawling mansions complete with extensive groundsfairly sizeable home and garden, in a rather thick skinned way as if it were some sort of endurance test, occasionally mentioning it was impacting on their mental health. Meanwhile back in the real world, many people confined to flats, or rooms even, with no access to outside areas.
It's not really about a big costly wedding, that is the prerogative of those who can afford it, but the wisdom of having that publicised quite the way it has been, right now comes across as showing off for the sake of showing off! The world is going through dangerous and very difficult times., such a massive disconnect it's like some parallel universe.
We seem to live in world where people such as the Kardashians for example, have become incredibly wealthy for no particular reason, with no particular talent and then use every opportunity to flaunt their material possessions creating a simultaneous desire in some to emulate them and a discontent because they won't be able to.
I agree.

Makes me totally sick when babies are dying of hunger in Yemen and other countries
It's not as simple as that, though.
The Beckhams and the bride's parents could have donated the equivalent cost to charities trying to get aid through to the starving in Yemen for all we know.
Would the aid get through? Debatable
Who is supplying the arms which enable the war in Yemen to continue and its children starve?
It does seem an obscene amount but it's relevant to their income and the Beckhams do seem to give back to society too through charity.

I too agree with volver.
I have a lot of admiration for the Beckhams and agree, of course, that it is up to them how they spend their money. However, like others, I would be embarrassed to be seen to spend that much on a wedding when there is so much bad stuff going on in the world. Perhaps they could have off-set it by donating a similar amount to charity but then, why should they? It's entirely up to them.
I would never be a Billionaire because I would give so much away, how someone can spend so much on a wedding when there are people living on the breadline and others trying to survive whilst they are being bombed, I just don’t know.
I can’t get my head around it.
Maybe you have a different mindset when you have so much money.
We're all agreed they can spend their money how they wish. My point is how difficult it can be for the very wealthy and successful to raise their children with any kind of work ethic or focus in life. When one or both parents are rolling in money then the child knows they will never really have to support themselves. It matters not whether they can do anything useful because they will never be allowed to go under. There will always be money coming their way that they haven't earned for themselves.
Add to the mix a parent who is very famous, movie star, singer or whatever and you have a child who can never hope to achieve what they did, but somehow has to find their own identity other than 'the son or daughter of........'. It can't be easy, and I admire any children who do find their own way and carve their own successful career.
p.s. I live a very frugal life and donate to charity montly by DD and whenever I see a collecting tin....but I could still give more and I don't. This thread has made me think about that.
I wonder what people in Yemen make of us with our holidays, full fridges, TVs in more than one room, 2 cars, new clothes, sofas, indulgent Christmases, grandchildren with rooms bursting with toys etc etc?
Everything is relative. We could almost all have less and give more.

I get you.
I know it's their money to spen how they like.
But if I were to become a billionaire overnight I would be embarrassed to be seen spending so much when there's so much hardship in the world.
I obviously don't have the right mindset to be rich. Just as well!
I also agree with volver. Yes, it is an obscene amount of money, but given that we are talking about two families with wealth beyond our imagination, it's hardly unexpected. At least they're not getting themselves into debt to fund a lavish wedding beyond their means - which more than a few young couples do now.

Really I couldn’t give a ducks fart about what the beckhams spend their money on! It’s their family and their choice! We all want the best for our children! If it makes them happy so be it!
Don’t look at the pictures in the magazines or read the reports if it bothers you so much.

So do I.
I agree with volver
They are a loving family who have obscene wealth. We all want to please our children especially on occasions like weddings and special birthdays. What they spent, to them it’s not much money. I don’t think anyone is good enough to have that much or earn that much. No one works harder than those on low pay, working long hours to make ends meet. My heart breaks when I see people on the news choosing food over heat despite working. It’s an unfair world.
