Are we all really not having our hair done?

Hairdressing appointment this afternoon just for a cut. I was at the dentist yesterday to have my crowns finally put in. It's all very strange, waiting outside, wearing masks etc etc. I suppose its something we will have to get used to.

I am over due a haircut/colour by 8 weeks now. Have a short style so you can imagine how I'm looking, a state. However I will just have to carry on until our lockdown has been lifted and hairdressers are allowed back to work. I notice that NS hair is neat and tidy not sure how she does it though.

I am sure quite a few people are having their hair done by clandestine hairdressers in lock down. We are sticking to the rules and have bought some hair trimmers lately. I have always liked to manage my own hair in between hairdressing appointments and it has stood me in good stead now. Also experience in trimming one of our dogs years ago! My son was desperate for me to cut his hair and he was reasonably pleased with the results - as was my husband, luckily. Unfortunately my sister-in-law (who cannot manage her hair for toffee) has resorted to keeping her mane in place by two hair clips - not at all a good look when you are over eighty! Let’s hope we can get back to some semblance of normal soon.

Just had a message from my hairdresser saying she was returning to work and would book me in the week after next. It will be 14 weeks since mine was cut and it is usually done every 5 weeks. Hip hip hooray, I can't wait.

Much as I think Joanna Lumley is a great style icon for my age group - she's a year older than me, I find it hard to believe she cuts her own hair.

You don't cut above the fingers (she said 'above scissors' which was confusing) but below. Your fingers are the guide.

Maybe she cuts her fringe but then that's not difficult.

Ladies, I'm afraid I must confess to you all that this lockdown is actually all my fault. Just after my last haircut (short, spiky, natural silver) I caught myself wondering how my hair would look if I let it grow, but dismissed the idea as I would have to be in a situation where I couldn't visit my hairdresser for weeks/months .....

I worked in hairdressing for nearly three years in the 1970s. Rollers combs brushes etc where put in sterilising machines every day it was the apprentices job. Then the drying machines were cleaned and wiped over. I don't think this is the routine now but I am not sure and no I cannot prove it.

I'll need to get my hot brush out soon... mine's going through that awful phase between short and trendy (kind of) and long enough for an updo.

I suppose if someone came round with a pair of those lopping things one uses on trees, they could have a go at mine and maintain social distancing!

I now have a short bob having cut my hair yesterday. It is not exactly Vidal Sassoon but to me, it looks okay. Any imperfections will grow!

I wonder if I can ask for some advice please. My hair is afro type, and yesterday I gave it a bit of a chop - it now looks like a rat has nibbled it, but also I used to use a temporary wash in hair colour which I now can't obtain anywhere online (harmony - coco - soft mid brown). I ordered what I thought was a brown shade (hazel), used it and now have a kind of blondish 'frill' round the sides and fringe area! Certainly different, it is where I am going grey and was trying to hold back the years! Please can anyone recommend a darkish brown hair colour that is not a permanent dye - I work in a shop, and have had some strange looks today!

I was lucky and had a hairdressers appointment 2 days before lockdown, i had it cut very short but within the next week i will have a serious afro style, i cant go longer than 4 weeks between cuts as my hair is really thick and grows like wildfire, i have bought 7 new elasticated bandanas to try and keep it under control.

Only scissors I have are pinking shears. Looking forward to it.

I had a phone call from my hairdresser last week. They are thinking of opening in early June. Did I want to make an appointment? I said no thank you.
That is far to early for me to contemplate. Let’s just see how things go first.

My hairdresser,whom I visited in the city,became a friend when we discovered we actually live near each other! SO she's been once, pre lockdown, to cut my hair, as my neuro condition worsened. She called round,randomly, a week or so ago,after being to Sainsbury's, and gifted me a bottle..(I love friends bearing gifts,don't you?)
Anyway, once I've sorted out getting cash, I'll certainly ask her to bring me some shopping and,should she have scissors in her bag.....

I don't think it is. The cloaks are usually hung back up in a cupboard and I've never seen a hairdresser wiping down the chairs..... nor the thing about fresh air circulating. Most salons are like an oven with all the hairdryers going.

I've done my roots several times since the lockdown and have managed to get my preferred hair colour on line. I have always done that anyway between appointments. I've also cut my fringe and trimmed other bits off ends, I don't find it difficult and have proper hairdressing scissors. Blow drying isn't difficult, plus a heated hairbrush helps a lot. My husband wants me to set about his hair now, I don't know, I quite like him looking like the mad professor

Having said all that I wish I had had my highlights and a cut done before the lockdown, I was due to have it done and then everything shut down suddenly. As with so many things previously taken for granted, I don't know when I will feel confident to go to the hairdressers again. Eventually yes! but don't know how far away that day will be!

I’m delighted with the Josh Wood colour I bought online. Pricey, but the results are really good.

except when the haircut is taking place

Customers and hairdressers must wear face masks

“Direct communication” is not permitted – discussion about hair style, colour etc must be done via a mirror and kept to a minimum

No blow-drying, if possible

Fresh air must be circulated, which the rules specify should be 100m3/h per hairdresser

Scissors and other tools must be thoroughly disinfected between uses, as well as hairdressing chairs

Hairdressing cloaks must be washed after each use and, if possible, a disposable cloak should be worn over the top

Customers must wash their hands when entering the salon and leaving it.

I haven't washed mine for over a week as an experiment. It still looks great. I cut it yesterday quite successfully.

I was queueing outside our Post Office yesterday when my hairdresser came to queue behind me. We had a chat, then she suddenly said “Did your husband cut your hair?”.
As my grandson would say...No shit, Sherlock !

Salons are alliwed to open here, Sydney, as they are considered to be an essential service. My own hairdresser is closing her business at the weekend, no business. I cant see myself going into a salon for months yet.

It's Autumn here in Sydney so i wear my pull on hat - but desperately want a cut and colour!

My hair was darkish brown and grey mix. I'd been colouring it myself with a semi, but not all over. Just applying with a brush on parting and where it really shows, so it didn't look too much of a block colour, more natural.

Now I've left it, but hate the very obvious silver parting, glinting during zoom meetings. So I lightly spray that with superdrug root colour.

Then I decided to do a few very fine bleach highlights on fringe and around face. It has just lightened hair to pale brown, so blends better with grey coming in. I think lighter hair looks better as you get older, the dark brown was draining on me. I am a work in progress! I have a box of dye if needed.
