I really can't understand why your friend is being so perverse OP. Even if an accident is unlikely it could still happen and she could kill someone in the front seat as well as herself if she is thrown forward.

It is committing an offence if she doesn't us a belt. I won't get in car with her.

My brother in law was stopped by the police because his granddaughter had taken off her seatbelt, he couldn’t see because she was in the back. The police spoke to her kindly and she never took it off again.

I would still socialise with her but she needs to consider other people!!
If the cab is stopped, it's the driver that gets the fine for not making the passengers wear seat belts, although they could then charge the passengers extra to cover the fine!
If anyone is in the seat in front of her, she could very well cause their death and she could survive - would she want that on ber conscience?
Personally, in my own opinion, she's being stupid and uncaring and I'd rather not get in a cab with someone who has such disregard for others!!!

It would not affect my friendship if a friend didn’t wear theirs, I would just remind them and leave it at that.

my mother wouldn't put on a seat belt until I told her she would get the fine not me!

My DH was the opposite - he said (before it was compulsory) that he wouldn't wear it, but changed his mind when told the colleague who gave him lifts to work would get fined.
(I told him that and knew it wasn't true, btw, but he didn't.)

According to the above, there is no exemption for passengers in the taxi, only the driver.

Next time, don't take a taxi with that friend.

I come to this from the other end. DH's insistence on seatbelts and child restraints, long before they were common, let alone compulsory, saved our lives when a drunken driver turned out of a side road without looking, forced DH to break violently, swerve off the road and into a hedge.

DH and I were wearing seatbelts and our 9 month old son was in the back in one of the early Britax child seats. Without DH's care, DS would have been on my lap in the front and my unrestrained journey through the windscreen would have killed both of us.

The driver is only responsible for persons under age wearing seat belts but as a taxi driver surely he/she should have insisted???

To be stupid about your own safety is daft enough but to be selfish about the safety of others (the driver or other passengers and road users, who would be traumatised for life) is sheer criminal selfishness.

It's illegal here in NZ not to be belted in anywhere and if you have children they must be in proper car seats, in the back only.
