No more Sleeping Beauty ??

Ban a child from something, it will make it more interesting.
Of course it will - it makes it into something forbidden but exciting that other children are allowed to do.
So when they ask if they can go for a 'sleepover' what's the first thing they will ask for - to watch a Disney movie!!

I have never heard such tosh! Not you worried about being harangued, but what you were listening to. My daughter who is now a mother of three girls, saw every Disney film that was about when she was young. Now her daughters watch and enjoy them. Are these interviews done to stir up, exactly the sort of discussion now happening? Ban a child from something, it will make it more interesting.

The Princess and the Frog is by far the least trashy of the Disney princess films. Sadly it was also the last hand drawn one.

Beau I would have agreed with you about 'Frozen' when I saw fragments of my DGD's repeated watchings of the film. However having watched it all one afternoon when I had a very poorly little girl to look after I changed my opinion.

The film portrays two sisters who love each other. Elsa shuts herself away to avoid hurting her sister and then goes into self imposed exile to avoid the same for her kingdom. Anna never gives up on her sister and finally it is her love that releases Elsa and allows her to accept herself for what she is. Replace Elsa's magic powers with autism or a physical disability and think about how Anna has 'saved' her and allowed her to be her true self.

The men in this film are definitely no heroes! This has to be 'girl power'!! On the whole the most recent films I have seen represent their princesses as strong, independent women (Rapunzel, Moana, Pocahontas maybe)

Yes I think most children accept Disney films as stories, somewhat separate from real life. I certainly did, though I do have to repeat to DGC 'NEVER' go off with a stranger' like Jasmine (on a magic carpet with Aladdin) or in Snow White's case with 7 strange men!

Bookwise, I bought my daughter traditional stories, and ones like 'the wrestling princess' who was nothing like the traditional female character.

Like Beau,I too recently bought my GC the original Jungle Book dvd and they just love it. The old, original Disney films were, imo, much better than the modern ones. Films the whole family can enjoy together.

Beau - completely agree with your comment about Disney female figures. Barbie in a slightly different format. Having said that the whole issue just makes me feel very tired. My DD had a train set and a pretend kitchen and a tool kit and a Barie (though all she did with it was cut its hair) but in the end was a lot more fond of her collection of My Little Ponies. And no-one has ever suggested that might lead to an unhealthy obsession with horses...….

Beau, I agree about Frozen, but when you said you had bought the original Jungle Book I thought you meant the Rudyard Kipling book. It terrified my brother when he was a child. It was a book first!

My 3 DGD's watched the disney versions but found Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes more entertaining - no downtrodden princesses there! We recommend them.
After seeing the latest version of Jungle Book, DG3 declared it was much better because she preferred the beautiful elephants to the 'silly ones in the old film'.
I agreed with her!

I think the Disney versions of these wonderful old tales are terrible, bad taste in the extreme, but I wouldn’t ban them. I and my children read the stories and used our imaginations. I knew the ballet, too. Definitely no permission in the ballet! What nonsense.
