sodapop, I'm thinking along the same lines as you, I think. If someone's on the minimum wage themselves, it's a bit rich (no pun intended) to expect them to tip others.

My granddaughter works very hard with two jobs in order to buy a house Iam64 nobody tips her or people in similar jobs.

The salon owner cuts my hair. I always add an amount to 'go in the tea fund'. I don't mind if she keeps it for herself or shares it with the rest of the team. She works very hard, is not yet 30 and has managed to get her own salon - I wish her well

I have mine cut now by the salon owner, no I don’t tip, she is doing well with her business.Before that I always used to tip( in another salon) to the hairdressers who worked there.
Owners are making plenty of money and I doubt they expect it.

Agree card is probably the answer if you feel uncomfortable.
You would expect change in a shop. The assistant is probably on minimum wage.

She is providing a service, as does a bus driver who doesn't get a tip.

What bugged me even more was the fact that she accepted the money from an old lady who didn't own a house or car and only had a small pension.

I always feel a bit squirmy when tipping whether it be a taxi driver, hairdresser or restaurant. Often I don't have enough loose change, only notes which seems rather excessive. There's not always the opportunity to add on when paying by card so often I slink away without giving anything. You can hardly hand over a tenner & ask for change can you

My late Mum always told me that you don't tip the hairdresser if they are the salon owner, but the junior who does the shampooing - if there is one - should be given something.

I never tip my hairdresser and I have never seen any difference in the way she cuts my hair

The salon employs all its staff and a cut done by a partner is £55. As they employ everyone in the business the costs are part of the cost of the cut. As my stylist gets a share of the profits of the three salons in the group I can’t help thinking that it’s a full business model and that’s why I don’t tip. It’s such a grey area - like my hair!

The tipping issue again, why is it always hairdressers that are the problem.? Seems people are worried they will get a bad service if they don't tip.
Archaic practice, don't tip anyone unless they do something over and above the call of duty.

mamissimo you can’t compare what you pay a self employed person with what the government thinks is a ‘living wage’.
You are paying not just your hairdresser’s income, but also her overheads such as cost of premises, materials, business rates, as well as her holiday pay and her sick pay.
So yes, I agree with your DH.
Ideas about not tipping the owner are old fashioned in my view. If you enjoy the service she provides and she cuts your hair well, why not reward her?

I always understood that the owner/partner should not be tipped. Employees should.

Thank goodness my new hairdresser is employed and does everything. In my previous hairdressers I tipped the self employed stylist, the colourist and the girl who washed my hair, it cost me a fortune. I think that as she does everything my new hairdresser deserves what I give her (5%).

I used to but now I just tip the girl who shampoos my hair and give her the extra - juniors don't earn much.

I used to tip but no more. I think I pay more than enough and sorry if the staff don’t feel they benefit but up to them to take it up with employers. Sometimes if an apprentice washes my hair I will give them a couple of quid but not the stylists and certainly not the owners. I never get tips - not allowed to take them anyway ?.

My hairstylist is a partner in the salon and I only tip her at Christmas as they know how to charge....

I find the whole hairdressing tipping thing a nightmare, how much, where & when. It seems a bit outdated, after all it costs quite a bit these days. I would like to think that they all now get a decent wage, they certainly deserve it.

Always tip hairdresser, if you find a good one, you need to keep them!!!

My hairdresser is self employed and travels to my home, I tip her usually about a third of the cost so about 33%. A good hairdresser is worth every penny.

I do not tip when it is the owner of the salon as I dont feel they count it as part of their income the way the staff do. My daughter does not tip anyone, she says they get paid to do a job which they should do well regardless, supermarket workers,often on minimum wage, can be pleasant and helpful or quite surly but you wouldnt tip the good ones.Although I agree with her I would be too embarrassed not to tip.
