The actions by the current Home Office make me ashamed to be British. The attempts to declare the Windrush generation of Caribbeans illegal immigrants is yet another example of witless politicians and civil servants who appear to be unable to work out the impact of their policies and ultimately laws on ALL citizens of Britain. I am appalled by the current fiasco. These people answered the call for support as members of the Commonwealth and this is how we treat them. I hang my head in shame.
Joel this article is not mainly about voter fraud but electoral fraud/abuse. The Guardian article puts the voter fraud statistic in context - 21 cases in 2014, 44 cases in 2016 and then 28 cases in 2017 - funnily enough the Cabinet Office ‘failed’ to mention the 2017 figure - but who wants facts to get in the way of a good story. I’m not denying that there are not a range of electoral law abuses but voter fraud is not a real issue. So what is the real agenda?
Voter ID is aimed at those who vote when they are not legally entitled - it is a sub section of electoral law which includes a huge range of possible offences - you know like the Tories not declaring all their election expenses or that dreadful UKIP man who pretended to live in the constituency. I think some posters haven’t quite understood that
Lutfer Rahman, once the mayor of Tower Hamlets was banned from holding office. The judge said that he had driven a coach and horses through election law and didn't care
maryeliza, I'd have to agree with you. There were problems with postal votes in 2004/2005 but current data available doesn’t suggest that in-person or proxy voter fraud is a significant problem (I think there was one prosecution?). Info from the USA provides some evidence that strict ID requirements may have an uneven impact across different communities, and risks therefore having a distorting effect on electoral participation. The pilot should be scrutinised very carefully.
The different pilot areas are piloting different forms of ID. However the whole voter Id project is aimed at reducing the Labour vote. This government is an absolute disgrace
On 16th April 2018 the Tories said "all cases would be sorted out within a fortnight".
Windrush Statistics:
• 7,000 have come forward • 3,000 identified as Windrush Victims • 100 Victims now have their cases solved • 96% of identified Windrush Victims still don't have their cases solved
People of the Windrush generation who are struggling to get relevant id, and people who can't afford passports or driving license, are the ones who could end up disenfranchised if these requirements are introduced more widely
It seems like the different areas are stating different requirements. Swindon say you need your polling card, if not then photographic id such as passport, & they won't accept bank statements etc. Whereas Bromley are saying photo id but include bus pass etc or 2 other things from a long list which includes bank statement, utility bill etc. It will be interesting to see how many were denied a vote at each place
It’s not just the few who turned up at the polling station without ID - it’s the people who didn’t have any suitable ID available or who didn’t have time to search for their documents. I’ve often, in the past, dashed into the polling station on the way home from work, without having to think have I got my passport, polling card etc.
All our utility bills are online now and paperless, so I couldn't produce one, I suppose I could print one off or find one on my phone, but how many people are going to bother, especially if they've had a busy day at work , collecting kids, cooking tea etc.
Perhaps you could give me a few links, Joelsnan. My first two pages of search results for 'voter fraud uk' came up with a series of results saying that voter fraud was negligible.
