The family and legal representatives of the unarmed 17 year old black 17 year old killed by a white supremacist have appealed for calm and echoed the worlds of The Reverent Martin Luther King, Our time for equal justice will come. His and his families words.
WHEN. ( my words). The Metropolitan Police show exactly the same racist approach. WHY.
Please dont tell me juries hear all the evidence and decide on the facts. Out of 25 years a an officer of the court and having worked in prisons I guarantee white juries and the police condemn black people because they are black. WHY. When we have scapegoated every race, class ,creed that is different to our own who do we blame for the problems we face, OURSELVES, heaven forfend, surely we have have got it 100% right, or, hmmm, have we?

Nobody has answered, jura, because nobody knows for sure. We can all speculate, make a guess (informed or otherwise). hmm

j08 Tue 16-Jul-13 17:18:12

Under this"stand your ground law" he should have got off in the same way that Zimmerman did.

President Obma must be so pissed off about this after all the trying to get gun law reform through that he did.

America seems to be without hope.

River....
As was I.

granjura Tue 16-Jul-13 19:48:04

Bags I agree, just speculation. And yet,, think about it, honestly, and perhaps that law might not work for a young black man in Southern US States. I truly wonder.

Bags Tue 16-Jul-13 20:21:59

Yes, jura, but we honestly can do no more than wonder. It is speculation. However, I'm really glad I don't live in Florida.

Nonu Tue 16-Jul-13 20:24:57

I would not mind having a villa in Florida , except for the biters in the everglades of course !!!

granjura Tue 16-Jul-13 20:29:29

And the hurricanes. But racism would be even worse for me.

Nonu Tue 16-Jul-13 20:45:38

Yes the hurricanes , i think there may well be a little bit rascism in several parts of the U S A.

That is not my problem though , I do not live there .

granjura Tue 16-Jul-13 20:56:26

Martin did, and died.

Nonu - I can't believe you are being serious when you say "a little bit of racism...." - ironic, yes?
I have read through this thread, taking in all the heat that is being generated and the animosity which runs contrary to any form of humanitarian sense of justice, when I believe we are or should be all appalled at an unarmed black man being shot for being in a "white" district where apparently he had no right to be - what is that all about for a start? If black people are not allowed to walk through so-called white areasi, what is that but institiutionalised racism? Zimmerman is half Hispanc - therefore definitely not "black" and not an officer of the law, but Neighbourhood Watch so an armed vigilante from the sound of it. That sounds like a recipe for disaster in itself.
I believe that President Obama said that if he had had a son instead of his daughters, that so would probably have looked like Trayvon - does being black in a hoody that make it right to shoot first? Of course not. The evidence was flimsy at best. Saddest comment of all though I am afraid, Nonu is "That is not my problem though , I do not live there "

gracesmum Thu 18-Jul-13 10:32:27

Sorry about repeating myself - didn't mean to - put it down to the heat? I also meant to write that Obama said a son of his would probably have looked like Trayvon.

I am beginning to wonder of my laptop has a mind of its own hmm

Nonu Thu 18-Jul-13 10:43:52

I like everyone else was appalled .

However , it is not my problem .

gracesmum Thu 18-Jul-13 10:59:47

Others have referred to this poem, but I wonder if you know it, Nonu. It was written by Pastor Martin Niemoller and is so very relevant whenever we think "That's not my problem"

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

I would contend that wherever we are aware of injustice in the world, whether education for girls in Pakistan, equal rights for oppressed minorities or discrimination of any kind, it is our problem.

'No man is an island.......any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.' (John Donne)

Many of the young boys killed in US drone attacks could also look not unlike Obama.

He seems not to lose too much sleep over them.

Nonu Thu 18-Jul-13 11:46:57

I am really not going to get into this with you .

I shall not talk or think about it anymore .

I leave you to it .

A blog that highlights the victim for a change:

Thanks for the link when. A poignant article.

Elegran Thu 18-Jul-13 12:47:07

Another quote, Gracesmum "For evil to triumph, it is enough that good men do nothing"

gracesmum Thu 18-Jul-13 12:56:10

I totally agree - Elegran - even if caring and speaking out are all we can actually do, if all the evils of the world are ignored by those of us who can speak out - who else is there? Action is not always possible, but organisations like Amnesty International do so myuch by raising awareness and ultimately exerting pressure where it is needed.

j08 Thu 18-Jul-13 13:55:31

My God! There's been some preaching going on on this thread!

Moat in your own eyes?

j08 Thu 18-Jul-13 13:56:28

Riverwalk that is true.

The world is in a complete mess. Was it always this bad?

j08 Thu 18-Jul-13 14:01:57

When I started this thread there was no reply at all for four months, and even then I had to re-start it.

Where you you all then with your oh-so-holy moral outrage?

j08 Thu 18-Jul-13 14:02:43

That "this thread" is a link. Though you wouldn't think so. hmm

gracesmum Thu 18-Jul-13 18:50:19

Who are you accusing or preaching then?
According to OP this thread was started on 14 July by MOGGSY77, so I don't know what you are talking about. Do you?
