I love the word arcane it just seems to have been specifically coined to describe current tax legislation

Soutra, arcane is one of those words that sound right, even if you had never heard it before, I think you could guess.

Love this thread! My favourite old word has got to be "mulligrubs" as in "I've got a touch of the mulligrubs" meaning I feel pretty fed up and out of sorts. I find it brilliantly describes a down day that has no obvious reason for it.

Ho Jomarie, what a lovely word, I would normally say p.....ed off.but mulligrubs describes it much better.

Yes Pompa - glad you like it plus it is a perfectly acceptable word to use in front of the grandchildren or persons of a refined disposition!!

I was very discombobulated this afternoon when a lightbulb exploded and it left my ears very tintinnabulated Luckily the cat wasn't trans mog rified!
(BTW The bulb really did explode!)

This mornings BBC came up with a word I had not heard/noticed before "Lothario"

I like "jingle it". The amount of problems solved by jiggling it is more than you think.

Onomatopoea - clickety-clack, pitter-patter, squelch, rumble. (The last four are not me trying to exceed my word-a-day ration, they are examples of onomatopoea)

I hated school, I wanted to become an engineer from an early age (10 ish).
My school (sec mod) did not do anything connected to engineering, I had to fight the school to allow me to take an RSA group technical course at night school which concentrated on engineering subjects, technical drawing/maths. I left school at 15 and started an engineering apprenticeship with day release. I finally got an HND in production engineering. As a result I am well versed in technical subjects, but not English/History etc.
It is only recently that I have started to read fiction, would have much rather read text books, and still do.
