Change, add or subtract a letter

This replaces the original thread due to modifications to the rules

NEW RULES
You can change, add or subtract a letter and reshuffle the letters to make a new word.
You may make up to TWO amendments. For example you can:
a) change two letters
b) add two letters
c) subtract two letters
d) change one letter and subtract one letter
e) change one letter and add one letter

You can't go from understudy to critical. There are only 2 letters common to both words smile. Shall we go back to trisher's word and continue from that:
